I drained the tranny fluid, was very low from previous owner, now i cant remove the speedo gear from its housing, i am afraid to pry up on the flange where i removed the hold down screw, cast metal breaks too easy, is there a trick to gettin the gear out in order to add tranny fluid? or is there another place i can add fluid into and forget about the gear? :?:

Get some PB blaster and spray the flanged area, give it 5 minutes to soak.
You are right about the cast metal, be careful.
After 5 minutes spray the area again, and with a pair of work gloves try and rotate the gear assembly by hand.
work it back and forth (clockwise and anti-clockwise) once it starts to rotate carefully pull up as your are rotating it.
If you can first remove the speedo cable from the gears assembly,
this makes get a good grip easier.
But getting cable back onto the gear assembly is sometimes a PITA, sometimes no issues at all.
Once you get it out give it a good cleanup and clean arround the hole from which it came but be careful not to get anything at all in the tranny.
After this checking and filling the tranny shouldn't be an issue. It just probably hasen't been opened in a very long time!'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

I agree with Monkeyracing if you can't get it by hand use of a crescent wrench is permissible with care and liberal use of PB blaster.
But again use minimal force.
Also if you could put your location in you profile, a member near by might drop by and give you a hand if you wanted.'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

Actually, I think there are a number of members in TN, but I'm not sure of there location relative to Memphis.
Also, as Memphis is close to MS, there are a few members there that may actually be closer.
To keep you from have to repeatedly say your from Memphis, TN you might want to go to the top of the Page, click on Profile and add put that info in the Location box.
Not necessary, but helps to know who might be close to help or get to gether for a festy meet.'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

Not to sound so ignorant but in this case I am, what the heck is "PB Blaster"? I am having the same issue trying to refill my transmission after replacing an axle half in my son's '88. The axle came out rather easily, and yes it did squit tranny fluid out when I gave it a quick yank. I read in the manual that it says 75W80 or some sort of ATF, so which is it? The oil that came draining out sure smelled like gear oil. any more help here is greatly appreciated

So I put ATF on the speedo hold down plate where the bolt was removed from and that will loosen up the flange to pull out the speedo gear?
As for filling the tranny, I have the Ford shop manual (FSM) and it listed two types of oil for the 4 & 5 speed manual tranny. One was A.P.I. GL-4, GL-5 (75W-80) and the other was A.T.F M2C33F or DEXRON-II
I guess the real issue is still which one is which and what should I really be using? The oil that came out of the tranny yesterday when we pulled the axle half smelled like gear oil. If I should be using ATF instead of gear oil, should I completely drain the tranny first, flush it or what? The FSM is not clear on this and does list what appears to be two totally different types of oil. I could not get any real answer either after reading various posts I searched on for the tranny/speedo removal and tranny filling.Last edited by RitzyFestiva; 02-15-2010, 09:32 AM.
