  • Cylinder Head Question

Just wondering, and this seems to be the forum to ask, why would me putting a rebuilt cylinder head on an older engine cause the car to smoke? I have heard this from more than one source, but no explanation as to why this would be. :?: :?:

there's no reason for the new head and old engine combo to smoke unless the rebuilt head wasn't trued and squared before being placed on the motor, or the installer didn't torque the head correctly.

Been looking around here for either an engine, or a cylinder head. Was told by local junkyard that he could get me a rebuilt cylinder head, but with the amount of miles on the engine (240k+), no matter what I did, it would smoke.

If you had a borderline engine that the rings were questionable , and it had a head on it that had leaking valves and worn guides .

Then you put a rebuilt head that is all sealed up , It can push the rings over the edge and might create another issue with smoke .

I have seen people try to re-ring a bottom end without doing the head /heads , and push the head over the edge .

with 240k on it , personally I would freshen up the bottom end .

But you never know ,you could get lucky and do it and never have a problem with it.

Might be helped by the fact that the engine was rebuilt, top to bottom about 120k miles ago. Not sure.
