  • cold idle, not working

cold idle speed (full choke) should be 2500-3000 rpm, warm (curb) idle should be 780-920 rpm. There are two separate screws for these settings. Curb idle is set by the black plastic headed screw on the passenger side of the carb, and fast idle is set by a small metal screw on the drivers side of the carb, on the choke linkage. ,,,anyone have a pic of this metal screw? or the diagram that comes with a carb kit?
Folks I am very sorry that I am asking sooo many questions, but it must be done to get er back on her feet, so thanks for all your patience and help you have given me......

no pic, but if you go to the driver side of the carb and look JUST back from the center line and right above the carb base, you'll see a flathead screw that is linked to a levered and notched cam that a small tab sits in the middle of. that's the high idle set screw.

i found a flathead screw, kinda large, at base just to the rear of carb by the thingie that raises your rpms if u turn on the a/c,,,,,thats the only screw i saw and it was screwed in tight,,,,,you think that is the wrong screw? and does it screw into the base or the linkage itself,,,thanks again...

thanks FestYboy, i guess the screw u described was it, there are two screws with springs on them, the larger one adjusted my acc idle compensater (raises rpm w/air is switched on) and the smaller one adj the cold idle,,,i backed out the smaller one and idle raised on startup,,,,,,u think i found it? ops:

that would be the one!!! the large screw is the idle up screw for electrical (and a/c) loads and the smaller one controld the cold start idle. personally i'm a fan of the high idle being set at 15-1700 rpm because it's less hard on the internals untill oil pressure comes up. having the engine shoot to 3000 right at startup isn't good for the bearings or lifters.

i agree on not so high rpms too,,,,my screw was bottomed out, had no cold start at all, sure helps not having to restart/feather the engine till it warms up, again thanks for the info.............

alright, so i think i found a screw similar, is a flathead, yet with a phillips too? its got a spring behind it, is that the right screw? its on the driver side of the carb..

there are two screws close to each other (two inches) the one flat head screw closer to the passenger side (its down low, i have to use flashlight to see it) try backing that screw out one full turn and see how it acts the next morning after it cools down for the next start up, i slowly press down the gas pedal twice and then start the car, some times it still wants to go dead, but i take notice of how it starts , better or worse and re adj and see again how it acts the next morning,,,,i still havent got mine just right and have been fooling with it for weeks now, but it hasnt just gone dead on me since backing out the screw, so i know im getting close..be patient at least its not too cold yet when we are really going to need it....
also wanted to say that this adj is just for start up fast idle, it will drop when engine warms up, you may have some gunk in the carb that is not allowing the throttle plate to close on your secondary, try spraying some carb cleaner down the throat to clean it, also may want to disconnect the gas pedal linkage cable and send some oil down it, have u adj the idle screw? is the dashpot holding it open? still have things to try....

if its like my 89 carb, there are TWO screws at right rear of carb, closer to diriver side, both have metal shiny springs around the screws, you want the screw closer to the middle of carb and it is down low at base of carb to adjust on. also look at fig. 5 and 12 of the carb diagram , gives pretty good location...u have to use a flashlight even in the daytime.
and no way to get a camera in that location...

i found the little bugger, after removing my air intake or whatever it is, it was all black from whatever, and very, VERY hard to get to, how did you manage to get to it? i could only turn it a half a turn, if that..

good that u found it, forgot to tell u to take off the air box, i use a flashlight and a 1/4 inch drive ratchet with a screw driver socket on it,,,, turn it out (counter clockwise to lower) and see how the rpms do in the morning, i shoot for 25-2800 rpms. let it run for a few seconds and then tap the gas and it should lower to about 2k till it warms up a bit, if this seems to work then u can turn it again about 1/4 more out or in depending on how the rpms did on morning startup,,,may have to adj it serveral more times at end of day and test each morning for results, took me awhile.....

was the idle too low or high, did it stay running or go dead? mine was turned in so much(clockwise) , thats why it took me soooo long to get it right,,,if its really turned in too far you may not notice a difference, so back it out some more till u notice a lower rpm,,,,this is a little tricky but u may want to try it, before u first start in am, have the air box off and your flashlight and screwdriver ready, press the gas 3 times and crank her up, if rpms are over 3k try taping the gas and see if it does go down, now u can adjust the screw to the rpms about 1500-2k, but u have to be quick cause it will warm up on ya..if it wont lower with a tap shut her down and back out the screw 1/2 turn and retry in morning.....
