I understand where you're coming from, and agree that if I was just going as fast as I could with no consideration for the other passengers, that it WOULD be a death wish. Everyone needs to realize their limits, their cars' limits, and the road conditions. Being the last of eight runs that night, and being very comfortable with the car and tires you STILL need to drive within those limits, ESPECIALLY with others in the car.
I have a story, and it's kind of hard to believe, but it's a painstaking reality. It's about one of those people who got over confident in their cars' abilities and their driving skills:
We were up there about two Sundays ago, and we were just talking, and making fun of each-other. Then a blue 2004/2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STI comes up, and flies by us, all ricer status. We mutter amongst ourselves that we'll try and chase the car down with the Festiva if he takes off down the hill. About 20 minutes later, he takes off down the hill, so we pile four people in the Festiva to have proof if we caught the STI or not. We caught him about half way, and signaled that we wanted by, but he tried to go faster. So we started to apply some pressure to see if he'd start pulling away or not. And in this turn we all call "mother effer" (because if you take it tight, you'll swing out super wide and hit the wall, while exclaiming "MOTHER EFFER!!!") (in the video, it's the left turn at 5:06. You'll notice a fender liner or two, and broken glass on the outside of the turn), he entered a little too fast, and went up the mountain pretty hard and landed back on the road with a hard "thud." Although he was on his wheels (well he got on one wheel at one point) the whole time, the car was pretty beat up. He pulled over to assess the damage, and we pulled up in his headlights so he'd notice FOUR dudes in an AQUA colored FESTIVA on 155/80/12's. We all get out to check on him, and notice he's with his girlfriend... =O He told us "It's fine," as if to get us to leave to spare anymore embarrassment. We checked his tire pressure and suggested that he use his spare to get home, and turns out his spare was at home. He limped it home with 16 psi in his right front tire...

Hey there is a nice run way in front of John Travolta's house that makes for great high speed runs, ask those kids that went off the end at 100 MPH in Janurary.... oh thats right they are all DEAD.
P.S. He was posting in a thread the day before he did it about his great driving skills.
Sit back and read this thread, modified festiva on a closed course with one person inside, and it went over....http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=14253

There are about four different roads to choose from in this area, and this is the one of preference because of it's tighter turns and slower speeds. It's more like an AutoX course, only getting to third gear two or three times. (Second tops out at 55 mph)
Great driving skills? I know I'm still new to driving. I'm still learning something new everyday. Whether it's sitting in traffic, or spinning the car around to make a U turn, I love to drive. I've only been driving for three years now, and need all the experience I can get.
quaddawg's car was running SUPER grippy tires. I saw that thread, and he wasn't running the low offset Diamond Racing wheels. His track width was much narrower and that made the car less stable. The race tires grabbed, the suspension hooked, and the car rolled. Traction roll.
I don't try and take people for rides. But I don't say "no" if they ask to ride. There's a bunch of rumors and stories going around about that car from previous passengers, so EVERYONE wants to ride, which gets kind of annoying. I keep within my limits when driving up there. I slow down a lot with others in the car, because it's not JUST my risk, it's mine, and the others in the car.
Thank you guys for your concerns.

Ehhh... That looks like a lot of fun. We've got a few roads near us that are similar to that, but I've never gone down them quite like that.
Just be careful out there... I'd hate to see you or anyone else involved get hurt or die because of carelessness or inexperience... The track (even an SCCA sanctioned event) is going to be 10000x safer because you've got people there ready to help, fire extinguishers, etc.Simon - pimptiva.com
