  • My fest... Body work

As some of you may remember, when i got it was a bit of a mess

And that picture dosent even do justice.

The worst spots were infront of the rear wheels

That, and both rear 1/4 pannels needed work.

The drivers side had been smashed in and subjected to some hack body work. In some places there was up to an 1" of bondo plastered on. I almost died grinding off what wouldnt chip off

So i straightened it out much better, then i only needed to put a thin skim coat of bondo over it, mostly to cover up some tooling marks.

The other side was another story. Unfornatualey i have no before pix, but it was pushed in like you wouldnt believe. and right on the upper body curve too It took us several days, but we got it fixed preety close.

So then it was just a bit of bondo and it was straight again.

The hood was another nightmare. Aside from the rust on the front lip, there was literally a million stone chips in the paint that when thru to the metal. So i sanded them all down and feathered them out so that it was smooth again

There was also your standard rust on the bottom of the doors/fenders, aswell as a few dozen minor dents everywhere

Once everything was straight again, it was time for paint.

Thats right, no fancy paint here. @ $35 a gallon the price was right

To paint, i took the doors off because i wanted to paint the door jambs too.

It quickly took shape, and after a few weeks it looked like this

But you could still see the bondo spots some places, so on whent a few more coats.

    Then it was done.

It isnt no show quality paint job, but for what it cost, im happy.

I got a new back hatch, because my old one was too far gone to fix. Ill paint it too but for now theres other things i have to work on first.

    Waxed and cleaned up;

Since that picture ive finished my grille mod and painted it.

And i still need to find some glue to put my moldings back on

Thats it for now. Today im going to put the interior back in then i will post picutres that show how minty my new interior is

Looks good . . . does that foam roller leave any orange peel? we use the same roller for painting blades after fibre work and they leave a little stimple

Yea, I would have to find some bumper paint though, because ive read that the tremclad dosent like to stick to bumpers.

I also need to figure out what to paint the steelies with for now. I was thinking tremclad black, but im not sure if that would be too glossy.

No, all you have to do is thin the paint with mineral spirits.

I was also up aganst some major rust damage in the floor.

So to pass inspection it had to be welded up. Welding thru that rubber undercoating was INSANE i almost died. The stuff kept catching fire and the fumes were intense.

Are you going to reapply a under coating?

i cut out all the rusted metal, then i welded in new pieces, but i couldnt get the spot with the double curve 100% because it is curved both ways, you would need some kind of roll or something to press a shape like that into the metal so i had to use some fiberglass filler ontop of the new metal to get it right, then i put a thin coat of bondo over it.

yes sir already done. you can buy the stuff in aresol cans  from underneath i used undercoating, and inside i used a spray can of truck bed liner on the floor pan.

I'll hopefully get pix of the interior up tomorrow. While everything is apart ive taken the time to install some goodies... cruise control, int wipers, an interior heater, and power locks.
