  • 1.8L Custom Turbo Build Pics!

jsut an assortment of pics of the stuff ive been doin to the car since the last motor blew, right now im installing a new KIA 1.8L motor from an 02 sephia, i will have to swap heads over to one of my mazda ones to use my turbo manifold, but otherwise, it will all work. ill add more pics as i get more done.

my bolt on rear tranny mount, its not real pretty but it is a prototype afterall.

the turbo mani on the old motor, and also take note of the VW driver side headlight hehe, theres a passenger side one too, its just not installed yet

this is the mounts im replacing, its a solid passenger side motor mount i had been using, made crazy amounts of vibration...

and heres the smoked headlight covers to go with the VW light onversion, it should go well with my black grill and hide the round lights until i turn em on hehe

when i have my headlight covers on, i could turn my brights on and they're still not as bright as the low beams, just something to keep in mind

im not too worried about it, my red car is primarily a race/show car in the works anyways, wont likely see nightfall unless im on my way home from a track or something.

What VW are those from? Do the little black brackets bolt right in or is drilling involved?

the VW headlights were made by monkeyracing, i got them in a nice trade for another part i had, the VW bracket is welded to a modified festiva housing, so yep, the bolt right in

jsut had to put a different clip on the end of the plug.

so i take it your not going to be using a crossmeber...i cant wiat to see how you stiffen the car up, i think someone else was trying to make mounts with out using a crss member?

ive been running without a crossmember for 2 years now sucessfully, this is jsut a 2nd gen design on the rear one. your not missing any stiffness since the mounts are solid, the torsional forces applied to the bolting locations are identical to those that would be there with the crossmember.

and also, the exh mani is for a miata, its a little thin so ill have to make a brace but otherwise it fit like a glove! not a custom piece but it works well

and on a side note, XP is for my roommates comp, not mine lol

Huh? Kia engine? What'd I miss???

And don't forget, those aren't just VW buckets, you've got some genuine Porsche parts in there too! (that'd be the little plastic adjuster dealies)

Monkey, Kia made a copy of the BP for the Sephia.

Perhaps a good idea for those who want a much newer engine.

I'm also intrigued by the concept of "no crossmember." I'm going to want to reduce front end weight in "Speedstiva" when I get her transformed sometime next summer (cross fingers).

How rigid do the motor mounts need to be? Could they use poly isolators or do they really have to be all metal?

About how much does a crossmember weigh? I'm guessing about 15 to 20 pounds.

You could go all metal, but you have to remember that the stress has to go somewhere. In this case, it'd be the surrounding sheetmetal. It would be best, I think, to go with a fairly stiff poly, rather than go completely solid. That just my opinion though, since I'd like to keep my fillings in my teeth.

you cant do the no crossmember mod without solid mounts, due to the lack of support from one side to the other, your mounts would simply sag and the motor would jump around, the passenger side mount however can be rubberized and is where ive learned 75% of all the vibration comes through anyways.

how did you figure out the passenger side mount lets all the vibration through?

i'm really interested in doing the "no crossmember"
