  • A mess of morels

Found me a mess of morel mushrooms this afternoon. I came home and found three growing out of the gravel on my driveway. So I headed out to the woods. I think its going to be a good year. The ones I found are fresh and had just come up. Unfortunately we are suppose to get a frost tonight. That probably wont help. I put a cone in the drive so the wife wouldnt drive over them before I could get a picture of them.

Years and years ago my great aunt got her picture in the paper holding a morel that I swear was half the length of her arm and about the same diameter.

I'm going to venture out and expose my ignorance. What's a morel mushroom? Are the edible or poisonous? Are they rare? I must admit it is very interesting looking.

Oh guys! You have no idea what you are missing! They are a mushroom. Most people slice them up, put them in egg, roll them in flour and then fry them. Pull them out and lay them on paper towels to soak up a little bit of the grease, add salt and pepper...pure heavenly delicious!
They might be a midwest thing, I don't know. All I know is, if you can find them, they sell for about $10 a pound here in Iowa.

So Fresh, if you found them today, then I bet we are about 2 weeks away..... and yes, that frost is going to hurt your 'shroom crop

As far as I'm concerned, there is only one better mushroom and we have to pick them off of cowpies in Washington or someplace like that.

Hey Dk, just to let you know, these ain't nuttin' like the mushrooms you are talking about. Not like the slimy ones on a pizza or the fresh ones on a salad. These are a real rich flavor, not all earthy tasting. But to each their own...but you wouldn't believe what you would be missing.

Fresh, I get Damkid's plate of 'shrooms!!!

since i have a low opinion of mushrooms to start, i would be very hesitant to try these, BUT you only live once and if you say they're nothin like the ones on pizzas etc. then there's hope i'd try them

Well, I love mushrooms on pizza, in salad, plain, grilled, sauteed (sp?), omelettes, speghetti, etc. I guess I've never taken time to learn which mushroom is which. And I've never seen a morel, but after this lesson today I'm going to have to try one the first chance I get.

Or alternatively, the morel is a parasite/symbiot that forms the largest part of the human brain, and gives us our intelligence. Lacking it, we live in trees at a time when the earth has stopped spinning and the sun has started to expand. At least, that's the vision of Brian Aldiss in an old science fiction novel. Anyone else read that one?

They sell at the city market for $30-$40 here if there are any to be had. Yes, they are a delicacy. People go to great lengths to find them. There are places where you can get shot for trepassing during mushroom season. Kid you would like them, Levitan is right, they are totally different from other mushrooms. Dan I know some people who migrate with the season heading north as they go and yeah you probably will be see some shrooms in a couple of weeks. Turned out it didnt frost at my location. Im going out again today.
