  • On-The-Fly Hub Separator Madness

"Madness"... there's that word again... something about Festivas that.... well, y'all get it.

V8Festiva & I were working on replacing axles, rotors, wheel bearings & other related stuff today. We got the steering knuckles removed & realized we didn't have a way to separate the hub from the rotor. Dang it! What to do now? Do we make a dash (heh...almost said, "mad dash")to the auto parts store & borrow/buy a special tool? Or do we take a stand for True Festiva... (errr... you know) and see what we can Rube Goldberg together? I think y'all know the answer even before I say it.

By God, its gotta be Rube Goldberg or Bust! After a few minutes of noggin scratching & some scrounging thru stuff in the back yard, we returned to the garage with the essential ingredients for a Hydraulic Hub Separator: 1-slightly neglected steel wheel with plenty o-openings, 1-el cheapo bottle jack, 2-sections of trailer chain (I'd be willing to bet some of youse thought I was gonna say, "trailer trash"; which in & of itself would have been entertaining, but I digress...), a handful of 3/8" x 2-1/2" bolts, washers & hex nuts and 1-socket (1-1/8"). Wrap the chains thru the wheel, bolt 'em to the steering knuckle & jack the heck out of it... POP! Out comes the hub with minimal effort. I even have video to prove that the dang thing actually worked...

That is a pretty cool press you have there .

Grease all your bearings while you have it apart , unless you are going to replace them also .

Good advice! The bearings were full of nasty crud & the races were scored. Thus, Baby's getting all new bearings, races & oil seals while we have stuff apart.

Every time I watch that video I just crack up that the dang thing actually worked.

What cracks me up is that lady standing behind you in the second picture. She has this look on her face that says "You might be a redneck if". Haha. It looks like it worked very well though. Good thinking.

LOL! Yeah, that's V8Festiva's wife. She was rather amused when he said, "Honey, come look at what we built!" I think she was waiting to see if the hub section was going to go rocketing thru the ceiling or the whole thing was just going to crumble to little iron filings.

Very cool setup you have there. I'll have to remember that for the next time I do front bearings. But seriously, how did you press them back in?

Putting it back together... Uhmmm.... still working on that part! We found some more stuff that needed reworking/replacing after we got the steering knuckles off the car, so we haven't put the hubs/rotors back together yet.

The plan is... a big, long honkin' bolt, some big washers/plate and a hex nut (courtesty of yer fave home improvement store), a wrench & socket & plenty of elbow grease. Failing that, it's a trip to see a buddy who has a 20 ton press in his shop.

Make sure you don't throw away the spacer in between those bearings! Those were matched with the bearings to tolerance, and the most common mistake is loosing them, or thinking that it was part of one of the bearings exploded! After all, it's only 2 more weeks 'till Spring Fling! You gotta get that back together so I can meet up with you and yours!!! Also, make sure you get that full 150 ft lbs torque on tha axle nut so the shaft does not snap. The WV turnpike can be a lonely place.....
Oh, and I like the econoline headlight ring in the background!

Thanks for reminding me about the preload spacers. We verified that they were in there when we put everything back together.

In the interest of moving on with the project, we took the hub/rotor assemblies to the shop to get them to press everything back together. It took them all of 5 minutes from the time they picked 'em up at the front desk until they brought 'em back to the front desk! And I didn't skin any knuckles or break any wrenches. HA!

Ahhh, you noticed the Econoline headlite ring hanging on the wall! V8Festiva was into the mid-60's Econolines at one time. I've been wondering when that headlite ring was gonna show up on his Festy.
