  • Floor jack mod :P

So I've always had this problem with my jack... it didn't go high enough... it wouldn't even lift my festiva high enough for me to get under it... I usually ended up sticking 3-4 2x12 cutoffs under it to get my car high enough.. so today I decided to do something about it...

X2 Modding jacks strikes me as a bit scary. Looks like solid construction, but you've still compromised the integrity of the jack.

Of course you would never even dream of getting under a car with just a jack (any jack) holding it up, right?

Jeez people. Who said anything about going under the car w/o stands. I know I mentioned it not going high enough for me to get under... ya... you have to jack the car up high enough to get the stands under. Except for a few parts the entire jack is made from 1/8" material... I did all my modifications with 1/4" material (with the exception of the two 1" square braces in the bottom.. those are 1/8" wall)

The jack would probably pick up a complete Festy, I'm sure after the mod it will pick up part of one long enough to get stands under it!

Stefan be careful!!!! This is very Important to understand. As you increase the length of the arm away from the hydraulic cylinder...you have increased the torque on the cylinder. What this means is that lesser of a load will drive the pressure up in the cylinder....possibly more than it's rated. Most hydraulic jacks have relief valves that open if the load is beyond the rating of the jack. You have just made it easier to set the relief valve off.

I want to get one of those "low-profile, 2 pumps and it's up" deals like the garage we use has sitting in it.

Well, its not "low" profile but with 3 full "strokes" this 3 1/2 ton jack will lift a festy without and isssue.
