  • I love my job:)

Right now were working on a windmill project in PA. Were putting up 51 windmills and i decided to take a couple pics. From the ground to the top of the box thing on top is 270 feet. Each blade is 133 feet long.

A piece getting sent up. The big crane is not ours. Its a company in Quebecs. They bought it new in Germany, shipped it to Canada and it hasnt been back in Canada since. The tailling crane is the crane I oil on. Trying to learn how to run it at the moment.

I was invited by one of the ironworkers to come up in to the cell(the box thing) whenever I want. I gotta remember to bring my camera on a day we put up the Cell.

That would be a Sweet job to have!!

there's actually a LOT of those style windmills not too far away from where i live, i think when there done there's supposed to be like over 100 of them

            1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
            1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor

That would be sweet to get one from the top. When I was with the cable company I used to work for, I got to climb to the top of a 175ft. tower to change a light bulb. Would have been much cooler in the daylight tho. They are supposed to be starting one of those wind farms over in Garrett County, MD. About an hour from me.

Nerd, not sure about birds, but I know one of the big holdups on this one was that they apparently take out a lot of bats.

              Let the hoarding begin!!

I'm impressed....I'd work that job in a heart beat.
I was in the Carbondale and Wilkes-Barre last week and saw cranes on top of the hills at each area. Is that wher you took the pictures?

The thing that really amazes me is how this (and many others) is one of the things i would otherwise have never seen!
Thanks for the pictures. Really enjoyed them...

Great pictures! The big wind turbines are very impressive. They make the blades up in Grand Forks. Whenever we travel back to North Dakota, I often times see a convoy of the blades traveling down the interstate. That is quite a sight to see.

A guy I work with used to drive truck, and he hauled a few of these blades. The trailors are so long that they had to make the rear end of the trailor steerable in order to take corners. When they have to make a turn, there is a guy behind the semi in a car, and he steers the rear end of the trailor remotely. Pretty cool.

Those look like either Vestas V80s, or Gamasa's I would definately bring your camera to tour the Nacelle theres alot of impressive equipment inside. If they are still setting foundations I would get a picture of that - that is an impressive work of rebar and concrete - ours were 35 truck loads apeice

its literally alot like a giant erector set all flanges bolt together and the blades bolt to the hub which bolt to the main shaft and the yaw bearing holds the nacelle to the tower.

Nice pix. There was a show on PBS about radio and cell tower climbers. The main company is based in TN I think and hire sub contractors. Imbibing in distilled spirits seemed to be a common thread. :-)

That is crazy... The picture of the windmill that has a picture of the car driving past it shows just how big these things are.

I'd like to see pics of the foundation building phases too. Sounds interesting! (I took 4 years of drafting in HS - I miss those days)
