  • Touring the Golden Gate Bridge (on foot)

My trip to Castro Valley, CA to visit my friend Lauren is winding down. Yesterday she pushed me out of the house to finish her grading. (She's a college professor--er--"visiting lecturer".)
I know her from Ohio, where we used to teach self-defense at OSU.

I took BART, the electric train, to San Francisco and the Golden Gate bus to the bridge. I was to kill some time by walking the bridge.

Here I am coming up on the bridge:

And here's the old fort that the bridge builders had to work around. I have begun crossing. The stuff on the right is a side cart used to work on the bridge:

As I approach the middle, here is a pic of one of the huge suspension cables as it nears the road deck:

Again, this is the middle of the long span. This pic is of some sort of station with what looks like a lantern of some sort. Could be an antique for all I know! The curly stuff is razor ribbon.:

    Alcatraz Island:

    A large boat sailing underneath:

Well, now I can't see how to turn the pics. I'll show just one on its side to show the walkway I was on. If anyone knows how I can right this, please tell me!:

Here's a building that is on the far (north) end of the bridge. I have no idea what it's for, but it looks neat. The railings on the bridge support the work carts that run on the side of the bridge:

Looking up at the north end tower:

Looking up from a more middle view at the north tower:

The "neat" little building from another view. I'm almost across at this point:

This is how the main cables go down into the cement/ground. Sorry I lied about no more sideways pics!:

Here the cable is going into another cement anchor after passing through the first one above:

And here is the bridge from the north side visitors center/rest stop:

Some info from the center. I turned this photo earlier, but the means to do so are gone. I wonder what happened?:

Going back across, I noticed small holes drilled into the concrete walkway near the roadway. I took a picture through one and got this:

        And now for something UGLY!:

        My apologies!

I should be doing one more photo thread tonight on a more automotive subject many of you may like!

          Thanks Worf.

So far on this trip I've seen one really nice blue Festiva, near a "Big O Tires" place.

One Aspire near where I'm staying in Castro Valley.

One old (early '80s) FWD GLC on my inner city bus ride to the bridge.

One blue '90 to '94 323 at the nearby Walgreens.

But I think ya'll will like my next thread on another Ford.
