  • WWII Ford GPW

After my Golden Gate walk, I killed some time in the city library and then rode BART back to Castro Valley. I didn't want to bother Lauren with picking me up since it was only around two miles to her place, so I walked.

Before the crest of the hill to her place I saw this parked on the street:

    WOW!

There was a guy working in his garage and I asked him if I could take a picture or two. He came down and "gave me the tour."

His first name was Biaggio and this was his father's jeep. His father had modded it for hunting and recreation use and he had remilitarized it. Biaggio is a member of Military Vehicle Collectors of California and the Military Vehicle Preservation Association. Believe me, he did a great job!

Here is a period decon cannister from WWII mounted under the right front seat:

Engine compartment. He said only the alternator was not correct. He has the original generator on order:

    Under the hood itself:

Two crystal radio set. He said the range was about 3 miles max, line of sight:

A view of the front seat/dash area, with scabbarded Garand:

There were two Garands in the jeep and he had two bayonets for them. The top one is an old rework from a Springfield 16" model. You can tell from the continuous blood groove. The bottom one is a later made version. I believe both are 10" blades. (I'm cheaper as my sole Garand bayonet is a much later plastic handled 8" version from around Korea or Vietnam.)

Who can ignore the Ma Duece mounted on this baby? According to Biaggio, the mount is period, as confirmed by a contemporary picture of one on a tank:

    Left side:

    He took my picture:

    And I took his:

I also told him about our forum and that I'd be posting these pics. I'll email him the link.

I believe he does. He drives it to meets. This is not a museum piece. It all works and it's very clean and well kept. Now being California with their gun laws, I'm sure the M2 .50 BMG is a dewat display piece though. No fun shooting that with only a 10 round mag (it's belt fed anyway)!
