I had a 87 honda accord 2.0 lxi as my first car, and that was 3000 rpm at 70mph...
smaller engines need the extra torque, so it makes sense why the engineers geared them this way.

-"Hairlipstiva" 1991 GL 5spd (swapped from an auto), rolling on Enkei 14x6 +38 with 195/45/14 Toyo's, Jensen MP5720 CD deck, tach install, LED strip in cluster, down position rear wiper, FMS springs, Gabriel shocks on 4 corners, Acura Integra short shifter
-Escort GT 91 donor car with BP, G5M-R tranny to be dropped in the little guy...

oh I have no complaints about the way its geared its actually geared quite well. I just wish there was one more gear up top, I love the 1, 2, and 3 ratios, just wishing for an OD gear as well. just like all the guys with the 88 and 89 4 speeds want to put in 5 speeds lol
      No festiva for me ATM...

LMAO!!!!!!!!!! Quote of the year! :laughing6::laughing6::laughing6:

Do you realize what you just said?

A higher gear would only slow you down more!!! If you want to go up a hill faster you want to shift DOWN!!!

Try climbing a hill slowly in 3rd, then shift to 4th! Then tell me an even higher gear would help LOL

yes, but having more gears to choose from would allow better engine rpm control when dealing with inclines.

i understood what he was talking about.

In what situation would a higher gear be beneficial climbing a hill?? Remember 5spd = 4spd + OD So its not like you have different ratios to play with.

not so much a higher gear to choose, but more LOWER gears to choose. even 3rd gear in a manual trans is better than third in an auto for hill climing (remember that the 4 and spd manual trans' were 1 and 2 overdrive gears respectivly). immagine having to be stuck in 2nd in an auto to climb a steep grade where in a manual, you could grab 3rd and do just as well without having to have the engine scream at you.

compared to an auto then yes... but a four speed stick would pull a hill just as well as a 5 speed stick (for a festiva, not for all cars) but for the festiva 1-4 are the same on both the 4 and 5 speeds... just gives you an extra gear up top for faster driving without over revving the engine.

a five speed should do 3500 at 75..not too bad for 1.3 engine!
