Over the past several months, I've learn some things from members here and have taken some ideas to use on my car. I saw a pic of Freshtiva's valve cover and decided to try it myself.....the gasket needed replacing anyway! So here's some pics:

Looks great! I did mine w/o any primer... 1 1/2 years, installed and removed a few times, and still no scratches/chips, once that paint is baked on its real good stuff!!

So how is this done? Do you just clean, primer,and paint with engine paint (that can stand hight heat)?

That's basically it...some guys clean it differently. A fella at work told me to use diesel fuel, but I don't keep that around here. I used Engine Brite by Gunk. Soaked it for 2 days and it just peeled off. Then I rinsed it a LOT! After drying, I used a grey primer....2 coats. The next day, I applied two coats of Ford Blue paint....after drying, I used a fine grade sandpaper to remove the paint from the raised areas, rinsed it again, and there you are. Fresh did his slightly differently, using tape to block off the raised areas...

did you do it with spray paint? I thought once someone said you have to bake it in an oven?

I used Krylon Engine paint....this is the first time I've done this so, maybe there's someone else who can answer that.....I imagine you'll do some baking just driving it!

Wow! They all look great. I think I am going to have to be a copycat and try that myself!

The VC is diplicolor hi - temp paint, it gets baked in the oven to achieve max hardness. you can get it at autozone etc.


the engine bay on my car is just rostoleum black from a rattle can.

looks great guys! i should have done the same thing when mine was part, but was in a rust to get it back on the road. great work, and pics

Use a wood block and sandpaper and sand the top 1st to make sure they are flat and level. Then paint and then re-sand.

i used a fine file take off the paint. i think it looks awesome.
