  • Stupid Project??

Okay, so those of you who were at FM3 may remember the really rusty right side front fender on the pick a part car. I decided it was too straight to just leave alone. Loaded it up, and brought it home. Got started today stripping the rust.

Unfortunately, my camera decided to take a crap on me, so for now, the only pic I have is the one I took in Dean and Barb's driveway. Minor surgery was performed on the camera, and it appears to be working now. In progress pictures will be coming tomorrow.

So, for starters, here's the best before picture I have right now.

Here's the best pic I managed to get of it still on the pick a part car.

Cleaning up well. Nasty rust. Hopefully, updated pics tomorrow.

Other than surface rust, is there anything else wrong with it?

^^ Other than surface rust, no, nothing wrong with it. Other than it is an after market fender. Thinking that's why it's so rusted.

Look at it this way, it's lighter. Like the old school "acid dip" that they used to do to race cars. :p

Progress so far. Rust is pretty much gone. Got a bit of fine sanding to do before the next step. Basically, went after it with a sander, and a dremel for the small, tight areas. Then gave it a wipe down with penetrating oil. (Rust forms fast :shock Far from done, but I think it looks much, much better. Your thoughts?

P.S. The darker areas are not rust, they are shadows. I guess the oil being on there just makes the shadows stand out more.

may have to prime it a few times
                      then wet sand it
                      then prime again
to cover the pits and imperfections the rust made

Kind of figured it was going to be a lot or priming, and a lot of sanding. I've got a bit more sanding to do, just ran out of paper. Back at it tomorrow after work.

I've seen hoods do that. The primer from the reman factory would come so thin that it would wash off and the whole darn thing would rust.
