The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of Moonlight (which of course is reflected sunlight) from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring. Since the ice crystals typically have the same shape, namely a hexagonal shape, the Moon ring is almost always the same size.money pit

It was covered by clouds at my house last night, but this morning around 6:30, I could see the dark side of the sky with the moon still going down and the sunset on the opposite side. I wish I could've taken a picture of it, but it was just way too wide. It would've been an awesome picture though since I live out in the country.
I did see the moon on Monday night though and it was AMAZING!-Caleb

that's pretty neat. We don't get the moon halo here much. Not enough ice crystals I guess.
