  • Possibly rescued an 88 today

So I'm sitting at work today and my friend sends me a text asking if I've seen the Festivas on Craigslist to which I reply no because I've been really busy lately. I log on to CL for Charlotte NC and there's 2 new postings. One is a beautiful aqua or blue 90 with factory alloys for $700. I tell my buddy to call and of course it's gone.

The other ad is for an 88 for $350 with "engine problems". I tell my buddy to call about that one because it may be a good deal depending on what the "engine problem" is. I assume that the car is a trade in because it's listed by a used car lot. My friend calls me and says the guy is a typical used car salesman and all he would say is that he's had tons of calls but no one has come to look at it, the car needs a motor, and it's $350 firm.

We go to look at the car and this thing has been sitting since 2007 and it's REALLY dirty...but nothing soap and water won't fix. My buddy tells me the salesman said the PO ran it low on oil and locked the motor up, they tried to crank it and it wouldn't do anything. Personally, I never believe a word a used car salesman says so I have my buddy put the car in gear and we push it back and forth and get the motor to turn a full revolution with no issues. We also notice that the steering column has been messed with like they were trying to hot wire the car or something. I told my buddy that maybe they did try to crank it and maybe the starter was bad and that's why they said "it wouldn't do anything" because obviously the motor isn't locked up. We go talk to the seller and I get him down to $300. He said he was gonna send the car to be wholesaled tomorrow if we hadn't picked it up. He gives us the title and the key and we go back an hour later to pick it up with the rollback.

This is where I find more discrepancies with his story on the car because the key he gave us wouldn't fit the ignition. We called him and he says that's the key he was given when it was traded in. That's when I tell my buddy; "I don't see how they could diagnose the engine problem without they key to crank the thing". So we're thinking they just went with the story the PO gave them and didn't even mess with it. Heck, they didn't even know what transmission was in it. His CL ad said it was a 4 spd but a link from there to info about the car on his lots website said 5spd. Anyway, we got it home tonight. The next step is to get a key cut, put a battery in it, and just see what's up with the motor.

Here's a pic my friend took with his phone while we were checking the car out. More pics and updates on this car will be coming soon as we unravel the mystery of the "engine problem".

well unless it was replaced or it is an LX the tranny is a 4 speed. I would try your Key in the ignition. Many people have interchangeable keys...lol. Since it is carbed there may be some issues with that from sitting. Hopefully they didn't mess anything with those hanging wires on the column you are talking about.

If your key does not work try a friends if you have anybody around you that has a Festy. Short of that you can pull the passenger side lock cylinder and a locksmith can cut a new key from the numbers on it.

It's a 4 speed, I went through the gears. The guy sells high end cars on his lot and said he just put it on CL to see what kind of bites he'd get on it. I tried 3 different keys and none would work so I'm gonna pull the cylinder after we get it unloaded. I'll use the same locksmith that cut my key about a month ago. He had a great price and really fast turn around.

I pulled the air cleaner cover and the filter is almost brand new and the carb is clean as a pin inside. I was surprised. Also, it doesn't look like they fiddled with the wiring too much. I'm guessing they were thinking; "it's a Festiva, why bother?"

ahhh , cool....hope the key gets it going....check the fusible links for corrosion while you are at it....if it does not start. If it does not run over at all check the middle one.

Good luck....looks like a great body on it.

Ahhh, good advice, thank you Hopefully the weather won't be too bad this weekend so I can check it out while doing some work to Cody's (Lanemeyer14) ride.

The body has the usual dings and such. The only really bad spot is the right quarter as you can see from the pic. I think I can pop most of that back out by hand though.

I was really surprised. I tried 3 different keys and I figured one would work. The key I had cut for mine did at least unlock his doors. He got a kick out of that LOL

                    Update:

The dealer we got the car from called today and said he contacted the PO about the key. He said the PO had another key and would be dropping it off tomorrow. Hopefully we get the right one this time

                            ^^ That's what we're thinking too :thumbright:

I doubt they spent more than 10 minutes trying to diagnose it. The guy selling it couldn't have cared less about the car. Hopefully the weather will hold off this weekend so we can at least get it fired up and see what happens.

It does until you give it some throttle...LOL :laughing6:

We never heard back from the guy about the key, so today we decided just to drop the switch off the column and crank it with a screwdriver. She fired up and smoked for a bit and after that she idled beautifully. There were no issues until we revved it up a little...that's when the knock in the bottom end introduced itself to us. After talking it over we did a quick compression check and found #3 cylinder to be low so that's when we decided to just pull the engine and see what's up. But first, we drove it around the block to make sure all the gears in the transmission worked well...that's when we discovered the lack of brakes (no fluid)..hahaha. We got it back home safely thanks to the e-brake and started pulling the engine. A short time later and it was out. The oil was still warm when we drained it...LOL. We talked about maybe swapping in a junkyard motor but we decided a full rebuild would be better. That way at the end of the day Brad knows what he's got and he'll have something he'll feel comfortable taking on long road trips. We're also discussing the possibility of boring it out to basically make it a B6.

We think whoever had the car tried to take care of it. We've found alot of new parts on it. It's had a full tune-up, new tires, new brakes, complete new exhaust system from manifold to muffler, new starter, and a new clutch.

Here's some pics we got today:

                              Closeup of the dirt

A small spot on the hood we cleaned

                              Some more dirt

Right after we fired it up. You can still see a little smoke in the pic
