^^ It's tempting but I don't really wanna mess with having to change the harness or ECU. I'm just looking for more of a pull and swap. Plus I'm pretty satisfied with my little B3 at the moment.
That's the one you should get. And then keep looking for a B8 or find one you can rebuild

All I can say is WOW!
Well, we finally got around to tearing down the motor today and all I can say is WOW. I don't see how this car ran at all let alone how great it ran when we cranked it. The first thing to get our attention was the fact that we had to beat the cam out of the head! The #1 cam journal is trashed. This car was definitely run low on oil at some point. Also, the locator pin in the end of the cam is slightly bent and has cracked the end of the cam where it has come to a very sudden stop at some point. We also noticed the car has a new timing belt. Sooooo......anytime you pull something apart that you didn't personally blow up it's always a little like an episode of CSI. With that being said, we think it went a little like this; They ran the car low on oil and locked the cam in the head, which more than likely stripped the timing belt. Then...someone took it apart, freed up the cam, and installed a new belt. It never ceases to amaze me the things people do to cars.
After pulling the head we flipped it over took the pan off to see where the knock was coming from. A little shaking of the rods revealed where the problem was pretty fast. #3 and #4 rods were more than loose, they were sloppy. We pulled the rod caps on these and the bearings were spun and TRASHED. Again, it's obvious that this car was ran low on oil. The bearings get better as you go from #4 to #1 which makes sense due to the oil pump being on the front of the motor.
In any case, the only usable thing left on this engine is the block, the oil pan, the valve cover, and some of the valve train components. Everything else is pretty much scrap. So, looks like we'll be searching for another motor.
The funny thing is this car ran and actually ran pretty well other than the knock (which really wasn't that bad). These cars continue to amaze me.
Here's a few pics of the carnage:
Rod bearings from #4. Notice the flanges on the edges. You can't really tell from the pic but one on the left is galled so bad there's a hole all the way through it.
Here's the bearings from #3. Better but still fried.
A side shot of both sets. The flange is obvious in this shot.
Here's a shot of the cam journal that was seized at some point. This looks good compared to the head. Lots of aluminum came out with the cam...which had to be knocked out with a large hammer and brass rod.

The B6 is a pull and swap, you don't have to swap harnesses just the ECU which is very easy.Last edited by wybnrml; 02-12-2010, 08:08 PM.'90 LX

^^ I don't man...yours just has compression going to the wrong places so it's prolly a head gasket or cracked head worst case. But it wasn't knocking. I'd just about guarantee you there are more usable parts in your motor than Brad's
The big thing I'd be worried about on yours (other than the head) would be if water got into the bottom end. But I think we caught it soon enough and you didn't drive it far enough for that to be a major worry.

This below is for Cody to maybe avoid another over heated engine.
Better check to make sure the radiator is good and fan comes on before the the engine can overheats.
Need to keep a check on water level always before taking the car out.
If there is no or very little water in the radiator the fan won't come on and the temp gauge most times will not work showing that the engine is over heating.
If there is water in the system and the thermostat is opening as it should but the fan don't come you can use a front turn signal plug. That plug will plug into the fan plug at the fan and just run a wire direct to the battery and one to ground. IF you reverse these two wires to the the fan the radiator will run backwards See if the engine will overheat since now the fan is running ,
If you are thinking of replacing Lane's engine head should the block be good let me know. I have several of them.
Zanzer give me a call today if you can and we will talk about some options for you.
I may need you also to drop all some Festivas items with someone down your way when you do come to Raleigh for the engines etc.
