  • 2952 mile keys trip

So thursday 18th afternoon I got out of work early, packed up the car

    and drove all night to

First we stopped in St. Augustine and checked it out for a few hours.

Saw a nice KG and drooled over an S5

    Then we stopped in

That evening we swooped over to Orlando to check out

Parked outside Wilderness Lodge and rode around on the monorail to check out the resorts and got drinks at the Polynesian. Watched the fireworks and took the boat back across the lake from magic kingdom.
Disney's Wilderness resort can make it look like you're in Yellowstone.

    Then we camped.

    5 Star Hotel.

Then we drove drove drove, and my car got hungry...

...it tried to eat the fender.

    Saw a funny sign.

    Drive drive drive...

    Yup, I'm in...

    Miami

Huge wagon wheels are popular down there.

Then we left Miami, kept driving south. Eventually stopped to set up camp for the night and woke up to this.

We were finally in the keys!

    Kyaked

    Camped again

    Margaritavilled

And hung around Key West for a few days

    Yay!

Key West even has my favorite auto body/turbo parts supply store!

Found a nice spot to pull off the road, drive down the embankment, and park behind some trees by the beach to camp for free.

And then one evening it was the coolest part. We discovered an abandoned back road.

I stopped for a little photo shoot. (Is my love for a silly car a little overkill?)

    Check the GPS

    Zoomed out...lol

Ok so about 2 miles later the road is getting worse and worse and the sun is setting.

I took this pic right before I gunned it through a really deep puddle, sucked up A LOT of water, and the engine stalled.

Ok so I was freaking out a little on the inside (didnt want to freak out Ellie too) so I got some tools out, removed the air filter and pipe, dumped all the water out, removed the plugs, Ellie turned the engine over like 20 seconds to get the water (seemed like eight gallons worth) out and put it back together. It barely started, and was running on 2 cyls. I had to keep on the gas as the water continued pouring from the tailpipe. Then it started picking up the other dead cylinders and after a moment of revving the crap out of it it was cleared out and running fine. We continued on.

But wait, big rocks in the road? (other people? go away this is my abandoned desolate back road.)

    Crap, turn around.

Dark. We got back to the store just in time to get beer and ice before it closed.

Bye Keys, see ya in the stiva next time.

On the way through Fl I stopped by Greg's place to check out his rides, Casper and Euro.

I was lucky enough to get the first ride in the bprt version of euro and a ride in casper. We also took my pile for a spin. Yes Greg, that ride did bring my mpg down just a little for that tank of gas lol. Greg and his family are awesome! They were so nice to Ellie and I and they even fed us. Ellie got some awesome artwork done by the kids too! It was getting really late so we had to leave, even though I could have stayed and talked festiva till the sun came up ( I think we all have a severe festiva illness here).
Then we drove drove drove... got a picture by a giant dog...

...drove a whole lot more... pulled into the driveway, I snapped this pic, unloaded the car and went to bed! It was an awesome trip and the car was great.

Looks like it was an awesome trip! Especially that abandoned back road. I found it on Google Maps, I'm definitely going to have to check it out on my way to or back from Key West when I drive down there at the end of June.

Where in Alberta are you headed? 13 weeks puts you here round the end of June. Are you going to be around for a couple of weeks because Westiva2010 is on July 10th.
