    Most 121DB customers opted for the 16V SOHC 72HP instead of the 60hp B3 8V. I never saw a B1 yet [, neither B1 DA nor B1 DB]

I suggest your car having a B3E 16V SOHC as well. They were TBI fed.

Check your fuel filter. I changed mine when my car had acceleration issues.
This is one of the Top 10 121DB problems, here. The other nine things already have been mentioned in this thread.

    good luck

Would a clogged fuel filter also cause increased fuel consumption?

a restricted filter would cause fuel starvation, which would lead to low power. Low power causes the the driver to respond by putting his or her foot to the floor, increasing fuel delivery and changing the spark timing, which would cause the engine to run less efficiently. So, yes, a restricted filter could cause your concern.

I ordered a new fuel filter from eBay on Friday so it should arrive sometime this week. A cheap filter here is around $12 on eBay vs around $24 at the local parts store...

You guys have it easy with cheap parts from Autozone and DAP over there

          Fuel filter replaced today.

Original filter was still flowing freely and no sign of anything that was blocking it.

Have driven the car with new filter and can feel not difference so far....

I'm beginning to think I should just accept 26mpg (average and cast in stone) as perfectly normal for a Mazda 121 Automatic....

Does yours happen to have a egr valve? I didn't think the overseas car did but you could block it off and see what she does.
