Are you serious ? Green maters already? Mine are just now blooming along with the potatoes. The Carolinas must have a way different climate then Missouri.sigpic

Around here the "last frost" is unpredictable so I plant them late, they like the heat anyway. I took delivery of a new frig and freezer today. Im going to try and fill the freezer before "first frost" this fall. Put out some zucchini today in my green onion bed after harvesting the last of the green onions a couple of weeks ago. Already planning a larger second garden for next year. I want some sweet corn and it takes a bigger garden than I have now.

I live on James Island about about 1 1/2 miles from the ocean in Charleston, SC and Kumalaba lives (about 250 miles NE) in unbelievably beautiful Hendersonville, NC (about 40 miles from where I lived most of my life in upstate SC). They have 4 real seasons in Hendersonville, but the leave on the trees in our yard don't fall until the new ones are coming out in the Spring.
When we first moved to the Charleston area back in 2000, we lived on the Isle Of Palms (two block from the ocean) for the first 6 years. During 2 of those years we did not have a frost at all. The ocean has a moderating effect on temperature, near it you are a little cooler in the summer and a little warmer in the winter (and like you worry about tornadoes in MO we worry about hurricanes here.).
We actually get most of our vegetables from a CSA and we have gotten ripe tomatoes in our share for the past two weeks (and sweet corn this week). Oh..and some of the most delicious sweet corn in the world is grown in the French Broad River bottoms near where Kumalaba lives.
I lived in Saint Louis for about 2 1/2 years in Omaha when I was in the Air Force, so I'm somewhat familiar with the changes from bitter cold to sweltering heat that you endure.
You do have a great looking garden there. Hope you get some sweet corn in and get that freezer filled up.
