Went to my mom's on Sunday for Easter. She had a large Elm tree in her front yard that got struck by lightning last week. It happened at 6:10PM and there was NO STORM happening at the time. The sky was overcast and there was a slight wind. My mom had just got home from work and was headed out to get the mail, as she does every day. The mailbox is only about 20' from the base of the tree. When she got to the front door she changed her mind and decided she wanted to drink a beer first......so she turned around and headed back to the house. She got a warm beer from the back porch and a glass out of the cupboard (she's a 75yr old Czech), opened the can of beer and BOOM! A few minutes later a neighbor came over to see if she was OK, only to find her sitting at her kitchen table drinking a beer & smoking a cigarette. She had no idea how close she had come to disaster.
A witness driving down the street said the tree had literally exploded. Half of the tree was blown out into the middle of the street. There was a shower of wood & bark and large pieces of wood were found in neighbor's yards over a block away. The mailbox door was blown open.
