  • The Freedom Rock

Well as some of you know we are doing staycations this year, so along those thoughts, we drove 80 miles west to a little town called Greenfield, so what is the draw you say, well just off I80 is a rock that Bubba S has been painting each year before Memorial day to Salute our Service Men and Women. to learn more and to see the paint shemes from the past years, go to Freedom Rock .com

ejp2fast, the first picture tells the story and if you go to his web site, Freedomrock.com you can see all of the painting he has done in the past years, Bubba starts with a new idea and takes about two months to complete. the completion date is usually two week before Memorial Day. I can share a short story with yall,

Bubba painted the Rock a few years back, it takes some time, talent and ya plenty of money. Ray-- Bubba got a call early one morning, someone had vandalized the Rock, word spread like wild fire especially through out the local V.F.W. and the soldiers home from Desert Storm and more recent action from the middle east. Within 24 hours the young person was caught, dealt with and learned the error of his ways. The word was out far and wide, you don't mess with the Rock.

          kumalaba,
My camera is a cheepy, Canon power shot A550 7.1 mg it doesn't do the Rock justice, the detail on the rock is far better than my camara can catch.

Something you don't see in the Rock, the Parents of Soldiers who gave all and have been cremated, a small amount of the Soldiers remains have been sent to Bubba, he mixes the ashes in with the paint, then the paint is applied to the Rock were the Soldier may have served, such as the Helicopter or as a foot soldier. Did you notice the picture of the most recent Metal of Honor recipient, he lives in North East Iowa, he is a very good young man and when you hear him speak of the Metal, he lets you know, I accept this for all the Soldiers who were with me that day, I was not the only one there.

Thanks for the comments, it is a nice place to visit, there are picnic tables with shade, a pond and a three sided shed with guest book with info, as you saw in the pic's the flags are at half staf for a fallen Iowa Soldier. Something else you don't see, accross the road a farmer donated 20 acres for car and bus parking.
