It actually is a a garden spider. It is an orb weaver type. It makes a zigzag down the middle of his web.

Hotrod, don't hate on spiders! Spiders are our friends!!

Get rid of spiders and see how you like dealing with more mosquitoes, moths, ants, locusts, etc. One site said one house spider eats up to 2000 household pests (usually insects) every year!

"WHY ARE SPIDERS OUR FRIENDS? Even though they can bite, spiders are our friends. They eat more insects than birds do, especially yellow flies, which really bite people a lot. Spiders don’t see very well. If you stay more than a foot away from them, they can’t even see you, and they certainly can’t bite you. If a spider gets on you, the only thing it wants to do is get off. Don’t squash him; just flip him off. He may eat the bug that was going to sting you tomorrow!"

              From http://pelotes.jea.com/spiders.htm

I can't vouch for all the info above, especially "they don't see very well." Jumping spiders are supposed to have excellent vision, but they have a very different lifestyle from other spiders.

Paul, I remember some big ol garden spiders above the entrances to a Ft. McClellan latrine way back when. It looked like they were going to drop down and eat someone! (They weren't as scary as what I imagined might be lurking under the wooden seats, though.)

The first Black Widow I ever saw was also in the Army. It was on a latrine bench seat! Fortunately, the latrine was closed and the poor spider was dead, so my tender parts weren't in any danger.

Remember kids! All spiders are poisonous. It's how they take down prey! But not many spiders are dangerous to humans.

I once caught a Wolf Spider that was 4 inches in diameter.
Took it home to an aquarium, fed it bugs and such. It would "hunch" up when I dropped an insect in there, wait until the insect came close and "pounce" on it, pull it up to its mandibles (fangs) and just suck it dry. It was awesome.
Everyone would go...eww! but they could not stop watching!
Had it almost a year before it died of old age. It never once tried to bite me.
