The only animals from our local shelter that go to Pet Smart are cats. They have tons of cats (100+)....some have been there for years. As for the dogs, they only have accomodations for about 18-20 dogs. They need to keep 2 kennels open at all times for the ACO (Animal Control Officer) since they are mostly funded by city taxes. They have several different options for the dogs. They have a network of "foster" homes, work with many specific breed rescues across the country and even send some up to the Omaha Humane Society (when they will take them). Occasionally, the "Pen Pals" program will also take some qualified dogs. The "Pen Pals" program takes hand picked dogs to the State Penetentiary where inmates train them to be search & rescue and handicapped service dogs.
