  • They're watching me. Do they ever watch you?

I was taking my grapefruit juice on my veranda early this morning before going to get breakfast.

    And there they were:

Just watching me. As if they had nothing better to do!

That red bird looks cute, I don't know if I've ever seen one before.

      edit:
I guess its just a normal house finch, according to wikipedia

Male coloration varies in intensity with the seasons and is derived from the berries and fruits in its diet. As a result, the colors range from pale straw-yellow through bright orange (both rare) to deep, intense red.

Yep, they were small ones. Finch sounds right. My guess is that the two duller colored ones were females of the same species. Yeah, I know I'm going out on a limb here.

Reminds me of this book I read about recently in the paper:

Publisher of fine illustrated & visual books on pop culture, nature, architecture, design, gardening, and more + children’s illustrated books, stationery, and puzzles.

"America's Other Audubon." The very interesting story of Genevieve Jones, who also became an avian illustrator after seeing Audubon's work. Especially noteworthy is the participation of her family in finishing her book after her untimely death.

We got 3 bird feeders at home , my wife started that , and I really enjoy it.

With the variety of birds we have here its really nice. Blue jays , cardinals , pink breasted cardinals , Baltimore orioles , and all sorts of small birds.

Haha, they want that sweet smelling grapefruit juice! Leave a glass out and see if they drink it!

We have a woodpecker trying to make a home in the telephone pole in front of my house. He may have given up already?

The Purple Finch is the bird that Roger Tory Peterson famously described as a “sparrow dipped in raspberry juice.” For many of us, they’re irregular winter visitors to our feeders, although these chunky, big-beaked finches do breed in northern North America and the West Coast. Separating them from House Finches requires a careful look, but the reward is a delicately colored, cleaner version of that red finch. Look for them in forests, too, where you’re likely to hear their warbling song from the highest parts of the trees.

Purple Finch was the indigenous pinkish-coloured bird of the east until overshadowed by House Finches of western origin starting 20 years ago. Most likely this is what is sitting on your fence; one male and two ladies. Could be mom, dad and one juvenile but a bit early in the season, I'm thinking.
Attracting birds is a nice hobby. Problem at my place is all the GD neighbours leave their cats out and every corner of my yard has stalking cats in it. Consequently I've had to rename the feeder and nest boxes "cat feeders". I could clean the place out in a jiffy with a 22 but proven cat haters are not popular nor deemed socially acceptable. I'm told cats react badly (very) to Aspirin placed in bait but I've never gotten thoroughly angry enough to go through with that either. Maybe one day.

Easy to find out if they are. Just toss a quarter stick of dynamite into the air. The bird that doesn't fly away is the camera.

Cats hate offensive smells like methanol, and dislike noises like aluminum pie pans. It doesn't scare them, but it keeps them from getting around the birds without making a racket. Also, dogs help. Shih-Tsu dogs hate cats from what I've seen, and will happily chase off invading felines.
