  • Crash photo....a little reminiscing

Some of you may remember that I used to have a white 92 GL Sport until about four years ago. Here's why I don't have it any more ..

My son was driving and was stopped at a red light behind a Jeep Cherokee. He got rear ended by a Chev Cavalier going over 40 mph which obviously drove him into the Jeep. The rear hatch wouldn't open and when I went to retrieve some stuff out of the spare tire well I noticed that the floor back there was folded over on itself!

You can see where the Jeep's custom exhaust tip punched a nice clean hole in the bumper by the right side signal light and also where his trailer hitch was. The radiator was pushed all the way into the exhaust manifold. Amazingly enough, both of the passenger doors opened properly! The front and rear crumple zones did exactly what they were supposed to do.

The car was written off by the insurance company and I kick myself for not buying the car back and salvaging a few items, like the spoiler!

I got more from the insurance company than what I paid for the car in the first place and picked up the red one I have now. It had less than half the miles on it..... the rest as they say is history.

My son wasn't too badly hurt although he was leaning forward and toward the middle of the car to change a CD or something and the impact of him on the seat ripped it out of the track on the left side. He was in physio for about 6 months and got a nice settlement out of the whole affair.

If the impact speed was 40 mph, that doesn't look too bad to me!

The front seat brackets breaking off in a rear impact has long been a concern (that they aren't that strong).

Could you tell us exactly how and where the brackets broke? Or was it the sliding bracket area?

Does your son have any lingering effects of the crash?

      Karl.

The seat actually pulled out of the track on the side closest to the door. I'll see if I can dig up the photo I took and post it.

      PM sent too.

      Cheers
