  • Our chickens

I built a coop out of a large camper shell. We get fresh eggs every day. They are delicious and have a lot more nutrition than store-bought. And our chickens are fun!

    The rooster, Benny.

So what do you think? Should I submit this to totally looks like? Lol!

And yes, we are right in the city. We are allowed to have 10 chickens.

This makes me wonder with duck eggs so much larger than the average chicken's; if anyone has ever successfully raised turkeys, to have those eggs? Two over easy; would be something, no? And/or geese for that matter; the perennial guard avians, who must nest and reproduce too.

I've seen Paul's chicken coop and it's pretty cool, even complete with a festiva interior door handle as the door handle for the chicken coop

I've been lobbying Ottawa to allow urban chickens, but with no success, for the past 3 years. Vancouver, Edmonton, Guelph and a bunch of other cities (in this Country) have re-vised their by-laws to allow it. Not Ottawa, they want to study it to death via high-priced consultants. I too am a fan of fresh eggs and teaching my kids about the real world (what do you do about raccoons and dogs and cats, and with a chicken that stops laying?).
Good for you man. No rooster on site, I take it? Neighbours can put up/tolerate/humour an eccentric with a collection of Festys, a few chickens and a patch of 'whoop de doo' (whacky tabbaccy) growing in the yard, but not a rooster that 'loudly heralds the sunrise' every morning.

He's alright. Better than a lot of roosters. He attacked our little dog. She just pins him and snarls. GOOOOOD dog!

Two turkey eggs would be quite a meal! The guy I got a few chickens from raises ducks and turkeys too. Says ducks are nasty.

It's crazy that they won't. It's growing and growing in the US. Nashville recently started allowing chickens in their city. A lot of people are getting back to basics. When we got our first chicks one of them was a male. We did not realize it then. It was illegal at the time. By the time he had grown up the laws had changed and it was legal to have roosters in the city as well. You can have 10 of any combination. He crows often throughout the day but he hasn't woken us up. Several neighbors have told us they like his crowing! When we first got them their coop was not secure and we lost several. Then I battened down the hatches and got them safe. They have a very secure and warm coop now. I poured concrete on the floor too. They have free run of the yard during the day. They seem to be very happy. It's been a ton of fun. And yes my daughters love them and have learned a lot. By the time these stop laying, 5ish years, we plan to be out of the city. I plan to just let them live out their lives. They've given us good service, we like them, they are pets.

I love it! I'm not concerned about appearances or "keeping up with the joneses". 8)

With that rooster around, you be needing an egg candler. I don't think dropping a fertalized egg into the skillet and having a tiny beak & eyes looking up at you would be a pleasant sight. LOL

Many we eat are fertilized. He "works" all day. There is just a dot of blood in them. They are called rooster eggs. I heard the term and started laughing. Then I found out they meant fertilized eggs. They are supposed to be tastier. I know these are DELISH!!

                              Paul!

Tell them about the Festiva you drove during Rommel's Afrika campaign and has two unexploded 88mm shells still embedded in it and Fritz's faceprint in the hood when you ran him over and IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL CLUTCH!!!!

Then video yourself doing your typing hands thing as you write into the Panzer Kampfwagen IV forum after Fritz's grandson dissed some Festiva!

Then finish with the story that after El Alamein you pulled three stuck Matildas out of sand pits and carried an entire Corps' worth of rations to Monty with Patton's bon apetit!

That'll teach the Germans not to make fun of us! Then you can ready yourself for your Korean War Festiva in the "30 degree below zero in the snow" story...

                              (Please.)
