  • Pics of my brother's new $1000 pickup

Don't know how he finds these deals....

I believe it's an '89, but it only has 52K actual miles. No Rust, PERFECT interior, almost brand new tires and it runs and drives like brand new....although the ride is a little "harsh". Its an F350 with a 300-I6 (EFI) with the heavy duty 5-speed and 4:10 gears. It has no options at all...a REAL truck, LOL. A local scrap iron place used it to pull the occasional trailer, but no one wanted to drive it because it was slow and didn't have A/C.....so they finally just sold it. The plan is to convert the flatbed to a dump box and build a push bumper for the front. He'll use it to pull his skid steer and trailer, and do general upkeep on the large storage facility that he owns (read tax write-off). He said the paint will buff out like new.

Hey, that would make a good camper! You could tow your Festiva to meets and have a place to sleep without hotel costs. Of course, a hot shower is aways nice...

Yes, and they're much sought after. They were kind of a dog in the 1/2 ton when Ford put a 3.08:1 rear in them, but with the HD 5-speed and 4:10's they make a wonderful trailer puller. Good pulling torque, reasonable MPG and dead reliable. Most of the farmers around here prefer the I6 over the 460 to pull their stock trailers. Just don't plan on getting there in a hurry! Im sure he could polish the paint, replace the bumper and triple his money no problem. The flatbed is home made (and not very well built), so we'll probably build a new one from scratch and put this one on my '79 F250 4x4 diesel.

              Nice love the 300 I6

Here is my $300 (plus $20 in gaskets and seals and about 4hrs work on a diesel for the dealership) truck. I ended up having to put a slave cylinder in it about a month before I sold it (for $2500) but i would love to have it back. Sold it senior year to get something better on gas for college (ended up with a 2wd bronco II, then a fullsize dodge van, then an escort, and drove a crown vic the last part of senior year and most of college before i had to drop out. should have just kept the eddie bauer). Fun fact 96 is the only year for MAF on the I6 in the 150s. Once I get a full time job and get some money I am going to try go get it back from the kid i sold it to.

                mine has the maf.

Not sure if that makes it any better. Just finished a slave cylinder threw a new flywheel on it too. Clutch was new. 238k and counting.

Congrats on your brother's adopting a 300 six. I've had the same one for 25 years and I love it. They get way better mileage (50%), and have more torque than the 302 V8 equivalent. Unfortunately the EFIs are a SOB to work on compared to the Carter carb versions. Exhaust manifold comes off mine in 10 minutes whereas it's 1/2 day (if you're lucky) on the EFI version. All he needs is an intake manifold, carb, pre-EFI head, older mechanical/vacuum dizzie and a pair of snips to get rid of all the surplus electrical wires that will no longer be needed. Curiously, the newer style exhaust manifolds flow better than the older ones. There is a specific website (can't remember the name offhand) devoted to these grand old engines and there are guys out there that have spent serious time on them. Poor man's diesel! For maintenance and economy reasons, apparently, UPS exclusively used these motors in their worldwide fleet for about 20 years until the engines were discontinued at the end of 1996.

Hey, what would that do in a Ranger? Is it possible?

There's a guy on Ford-Trucks.com that turbo'd his 300-6 a couple years back. I don't remember the specifics, but I know he was extremely happy with it.

Anything's possible, but it's a pretty long, tall and heavy engine. A 5.0L swap would be easier and probably be as good on gas.

^^^ the carbed engines also very different pistons than the EFi engines. Also, the EFI manifolds weren't THAT bad! Unless it was in an E-van (but everything in an E-van was a pain!)
