GIMP or BUST!!!
seriously, GIMP is the best free alternative. i've used photoshop a bunch at school, i still like gimp just as much. has about the same learning curve as photoshop... first few times you use it you may be uncomfortable but its a fairly easy to use interface and i rlly likes it.

sounds like a blast. i actually really reallly like photoshop CS2 its my favorite. and you can make animations.
