The garden is really growing with some decent rain for a change. If a person was vegetarian you could live off of it, no problem. Tonights salad picked 10 minutes ago consists of two types of lettuce, giant red mustard, spinach, radishes, onions ( planted from the previous years leftover uneaten bulbs ), a bit of dill, and cilantro. Its going be good !!

It's kinda sad how we've gone backwards as humans. Most can't survive without "the system" as we see every time a "disaster" happens.

Nice thread. Nice homestead you have there.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

Good morning Fresh, your handle takes on a whole new meaning when we see pic's of your garden, the Iris are a favorite of mine, your garden looks great as always, I don't think I better dwell on this subject to long or I would probably have to call for a reservation this afternoon. Our Grape tomato's did well last year so what did I do, well I went with a different brand for this year. I bought tomato seeds from Park seed Co in the Carolina's, I chose their shoulderless whopper, they should be about the size of a baseball, very meaty and less prone to splitting. I also bought their Grape tomato seeds, their add says they are a sweet tasting tomato so we will see in a few months if I made the right choice.

^ Thanks, it's mostly the cooperative weather although I think the 1/2 ton of rabbit manure is doing its job. Hilled my potatoes yesterday as they are blooming.

didnt know about the rabbit manure, we always used cow manure b/c we had 12-15 black angus for free fertilizer.

I've used cow manure as well. I have a vet-tech sister that works at the stock yards in St Joseph where its was free for the hauling. I still find an occasional ear tag when tilling the garden. I've also used composted duck weed that I've skimmed off of my pond. Organically amending my soil ( after an initial soil analysis ) had done wonders for my PH level, yield and disease resistance. The difference is night and day !! Its been five years since my last full soil analysis so I'll be interested to see what the next one reveals . I know the soil if full of red wigglers.

I pickle, can, cold store, freeze, dehydrate, and vacuum pack and can keep a lot of things around till the new season plants start producing. I still give a lot away, that's the best part of gardening, sharing. Orca and zucchini usually produce more then you can process. Tomatoes too sometimes. Didn't you post some pictures of your garden a couple of times ?? It looked good IIRC

Bought this $10 attachment for my cordless drill. Four cycle weed eater with electric start video below. I know, its not really garden related but this is my catch all thread.
