  • My BP Festiva

Hi, here are some pics of my BP swapped Festy, rolled out of my garage for the first time under it's own power. It took me all Summer to get to this state, but I did quite a bit to the car:

-BP has all new shaft seals and gaskets, refurbished water pump, new spark plugs, and cleaned up
    -new brake lines
    -new fuel lines
    -new tie rods and boots
    -new control arms/balljoints
-Festiva Motorsport progresive rate lowering springs
    -KYB GR2 struts
-new brake cylinders all around (wheel cylinders and calipers)
    -new fuel filter
    -custom intake with cone filter
-2" exhaust with cat from Escort
    -Spec stage II clutch

I have lots of stuff to do/tweak. Just happy to have the car going again! And it's hella fun to drive!

    Thanks,
    Nat

Every car I have owned has had a turbo in it, until I bought this latest festiva.. I plan to fix that though.

Your not to far from DAMKID, who lives near LONDON, ON you should give him a shout. He is looking at doing a engine swap soon, and im sure could use the help.

Your car looks good, your engine bay looks better than mine. I have to spend all winter working on it in the cold, ahh.

      Im in central NY btw.

You should see about coming to the next festiva meet on October 14th, I believe damkid is coming and you could follow him if you wanted to.

What tranny are you using? If you are using the escorts, how is it working for you? I noticed you have a stage II clutch thats why im asking.

I'm using the stock tranny. The clutch is made for that tranny and it has a kevlar disc.

            Other plans include:
            -relocate battery to trunk
-cold air intake (the intake is in a bad location, right behind the rad. I will probably route it to the other side where the original air box was)
-aspire brake swap in the front
            -rear disc brakes
            -rear anti-roll bar
-refinish my wheels in powder coat (they leak now)
-bodywork and respray probably restoring original colour (zzzzzz)

That's the major stuff. I also want to get a decent sound system in there, install some auto-locks, get a nice steering wheel, swap the guage cluster.

Looks nice. How do you like the power? One thing, that line from the side of the valve cover to the intake hose is the hose for the brake booster and has a check valve in it, it's right at the arrow printed on it. It only allows air in 1 way. I'd replace it with a hollow hose or you can buy a small breather for it and eliminate the hose.

Do you even have power to your brakes? I see that you are using a normal hose for the booster. You need to splice in that check valve.

Get a pic of your motor mount. I'm always curious to see how other mounts look.

Yeah, gotta make sure you have a hose with a check valve, or the brakes won't really do well at all. I found a perfect replacement for the stock hose (which is too short to reach to the far side of the manifold). Goto the junkyard and grab the hose/mounting bracketish thing off a 90-94 mazda 323. It works great, since the hose goes to the exact same place on both engines. Plus the bracket thing makes for a great place to route the throttle cable. But make sure there is a check valve before you drive!

its that thing right there. It has a rubber hose on each end, but in the middle its a metal pipe, which I think is probably a bit sturdier than running a rubber hose all the way across. there is one tab that you have to break off the passenger side bracket, but other than that, just drill two holes and bolt it on. It goes right over the little factory lip that runs along the firewall, and in my case, I used the brackets to hold my throttle cable and battery cable in position as well.
                        No festiva for me ATM...

Crap I had no idea about that check valve! I've been driving the car and the brakes work fine when the engine is running. As soon as the engine stops, the pedal gets alot harder and higher. I imagine that was always true with the B3? Seems more extreme now. Thanks for the advice! So is the idea of the check valve to keep the brakes "boosted" in the case of a stall?

Oh and I'd just like to thank you Matt for your excellent documentation on your Cardomain site. That was my Bible for this project.

Go here: http://www.nattyphysicist.com/ for closeups of my motor mount. I started with the BP mount. I found that the stock alternator bracket interfered with the cylindrical mount when everything was lined up. I figured I could just cut the bracket and then weld to it. Of course, I only found out after I cut it that you can't weld to cast iron! So since I had cut off one of the studs, I had to remake the hole. I made it 1 inch from the other one. I had to grind a surface parallel to my cut so that I could clamp it up for drilling. You can see that in the third pic. The rest was mock up and tack. The engine sits too low on that side though. I made the mistake of machining flats on the round piece and that made everything too low. I'm aiming on grinding it and putting in some spacers.

Matt, what do you mean about eliminating the hose with a breather? What does that hose do exactly?
