  • My 93

    Hey, there -

I've been perusing here the last few weeks, asking a couple of questions. Figured I'd post a few pictures in case anyone cared.

I found myself a relatively clean '93 L. I picked it up in CT for $450, engine compartment covered in oil. It's still not registered, as I've been slowly going through my checklist of things-that-need-fixing and keep coming up with new stuff to add to it. She starts like a fire and rattles like a snake.

I rented a UHAUL trailer and picked up the Festiva with the truck I'm getting rid of in favor of the lil blue sucker:

Here's a picture I took tonight. The grille I picked up on eBay and painted (it was baby blue). I ended up pulling apart the whole passenger headlight assembly and bodging together some aluminum and metal tape to cover up the rust, etc. Hopefully that'll pass Mass. inspection. (the headlight assemblies online are too expensive for my blood, and I haven't found a junkyard around here with any Festivas yet). Gotta get all my greasy fingerprints off that front bumper, too. heh.

Engine compartment, pretty well degreased (at least from the valve cover up, since I had to replace the gasket. also changed the plugs, the wires, the belt the battery and cleaned the heck out of the air intake). I also took that plastic air box off near the PCV valve, as mentioned on these boards. I have plans for a cold air intake next spring.

I yanked the (extremely gross) backseat and made myself a flat surface out of a hunk o wood. I threw on a couple of coats of poly, because I will most likely be taking trips to the dump with this car, or carrying a dog around, so I figured that'd make potential clean-up easier. Note the white caulk around the driver's taillight, which I just discovered leaked. A lot. Like it was doing a fair job of filling the spare tire holder yesterday during a rainstorm. I pulled it apart and caulked up both sides of the old gasket, the bolt holes, etc. Hopefully will do the trick.

Things I still need to deal with:
    * front end making noise when I turn. Some joints needs attention/replacement
    * neither window rolls down
    * all four tires don't seem to be holding air very well, so i might use that as an excuse to find some 14" rims
    * exhaust is rattling. REALLY annoying.
    * i think my oil pan gasket might be leaking, too.

But for now, my next step is to learn how to drive it. Yes, that's right. I'm 33 and I don't know how to drive stick worth a damn. ha. That was part of the reason why I wanted this car. Figured it was time to learn. Hopefully be getting this on the road next week, barring any unforeseeable problems. Expect more questions from me. I'm sort of dumb.

    The adventure begins!

    Tom.

Hey I care ! Very nice :!: " Perusing " doesn't that means reading? Nice find, you are going to fit in well around here. Welcome aboard. By the way, you can never finish the checklist. Its impossible.

PS Don't you love the leafs in the fall? Stupid leafs anyway.

    Nice work :!: :!:

wow, nice find... that engine bay looks really clean, even has the exhaust manifold cover still in place and shiny. And don't worry, these cars are great starter cars for learning to drive a stick shift. I learned in mine, and since then I've taught my sister and four of my friends in it, and two more people in my new one... they are pretty strong and they are light which makes it a little easier.
      No festiva for me ATM...

The wood floor is pretty awesome.

Yeah the festiva is a good car to learn on. No "Wreckless driving" tickets due to way to much gas before letting off clutch.

ha - mousepads... that's a great idea. I already caulked it up though so it's okay for now, I think. But I am still getting a little water leaking in from higher up in the frame, either from the rear defroster wire grommet or that weird rubber thing on the left side of the hatch frame. so... maybe more caulk. heh.

i like the plywood idea. i had planned on using my red festiva for the
same thing. dogs, trips to the dump. now my red one has a head
gasket prob, and since thats beyond my limited abilities, ill just let her
                  sit for now.

how many miles does the car have on it. paint looks pretty good on it.
yeah that shaking muffler is enough to make the most patient person scream. good luck with your car.
