  • New to me engine

Well i broke down and got my new motor, i told you all i wanted to go bigger, but at the same time stay SOHC.

    Here's some pictures

And here are some other goodies i got for the new engine swap.

Motor had 135k on it, and it was a complete sludge block....i actually got 2 of these motors one for me and one for getnpsi's aspire. I plan on a full rebuild keeping it standard bore, regasketing the whole engine, replace a majority of the parts.

Those engines are notoriously bad for cylinder head problems. I can't be 100% sure but I think the problem is that the head warps and the #1 cylinder loses compression. Make sure you get the head resurfaced and checked for warping when you get it rebuilt, and don't let it overheat EVER!

Wait, that looks like a SOHC BP. The engine I was talking about is the SOHC 16-valve B6 from the MX-3. I have 315,000km on my Protege (SOHC BP in it) and it still runs like a top! They seem to be good engines.

Looks very clean, just wondering what makes you want to stay sohc rather than upgrading to dohc? Also I wouldn't mount that narrow band o2 sensor two close to your line of vision because they are mearly laser light shows and get really old really fast. My neighbor had one in his civic and it was so fun watching him turn the car on at night and seeing a disco erupt from his gauge pod. Good luck on the swap looks like you got a nice start.

Isn't the 1.8 SOHC a B8-ME, and the DOHC is a BP? what would differentiate between a SOHC BP and an SOHC B8-ME?
              No festiva for me ATM...

There actually all BP's (1.8).....same block as far as pistons/crank/rods. The water ports to the head differ from sohc to dohc models. In california BP01 SOHC came in 90-94 323's 90-94 protege's, yes some did have AWD. I just have always been fond of SOHC motors and boost or nitrous. Believe me the head is getting rebuilt/port&polished/3 angle, not decked though because I'm going to bump compression from the stock 8.9:1 to 10:1. Pheolic spacer will be added to the IM also.

This is my second o2 sensor from autometer...yes there a light show a idle, but under full throttle they're somewhat usefull....I'm going to mount it on the flat part of the dash above the center a/c vents
