  • Made my own cargo cover.. Updated 03/24/07

The one I had was coming apart , I tried to repair it , but it was like fixing a balsa wood wing on a plane . The wood was beyond dried out , the hinge was loose on both ends , material was stained bad , the wood was broken all the way around .

So I made my own ..out of wood , just have not covered it with material yet .
I installed all my new hardware .. Hatch clips and pins for the cords , so it works like it is supposed to.

I know I need to replace the cords itself , they are a little worn ??

But what are the 2 cords that hang down from the hinge ?? They are like new , but too short to use on top.

You should be able to make your own cords. Maybe use 550 cord? That stuff comes in many different colors. Just look around on the web.

So does anyone know about the 2 lower cords ??
I don't see them in other car pics .
They hang off the bottom of the hinge itself .
They are too short for the top .

Copy cat ! Nice job !! you look as skillful as me  I didn't use a coping saw though. I used the orbital Bosch skill saw with the scroll saw blade and the anti splinter insert with the setting on one. Of course anyone can do it the easy way.
Don't forget that stiff back, if they sag in the back the wont line up with the hatch clips. Ive got an old coping saw just like that, they are fun to use !

Mine has the same 2 cords yours does and i have been wandering what they go to. And your cover looks good.

I just bought a coping saw yesterday! For a kitchen small shelving project. I have an old one (or two) but they are probably buried somewhere I won't look.

The small cords near the hinge??

I think they are for safety, to attach to the hooks on the sides of the rear seat supports so the package cover doesn't fly forward in a crash. I could be wrong.

Ahh , thats a good one , I never thought of that , could also keep it from falling out and hitting the ground .

I thought they could attach to something , but I never thought about those little hooks on the side .
                    Thanks Karl !!

The cords attach to the hatch to lift the cover when you open the hatch.

Not those , I have those hooked up , there is still 2 hanging

I have a total of 4 , I am sure they hook to the hooks on the back seat.. the bottom cords that hang from the hinge , to keep it secure .

the lower cords go to the screw on hooks in the rear quarter panel covers

just below and in front of the rear seatbelt retractors

they are there to keep the cover from flying , in case of an accident

hey packrat, too damaged??? must of been hit by a few cars after flying out of my window
