  • Man do I hate spiders

saw this at work today...thought it was a huge spider

at first it looked like one I had never seen....then I snapped this pic...much clearer...it had hundreds of babies riding on it's back..you can see their eyes reflecting in the flash...

realized they were babies after I hit it with the torch and they scattered... I was flippin...got em all though....lol.

Wolf spiders carry their young like that. Ive got brown recluse where I live and its peak season. Wolf spiders are harmless in comparison and keep other pest in check. They can get huge !

                I disagree with harmless!

                Wolf spiders
Wolf spiders are commonly found in California.
They are large hairy spiders, up to 3-4 inches across.
They are a mottled gray-brown color, which helps them hide in sand, gravel, leaves and other debris.
Female wolf spiders carry their young on their backs. Except for one group, wolf spiders do not spin webs.
They tend to burrow into the earth and hide.
They are aggressive, come after their prey and are fast runners.
Because of their impressive size and aggressiveness, wolf spiders can easily incite panic.
Bites from a wolf spider can cause pain, redness and swelling.
The large jaws/fangs can cause a tear in the skin as they bite.
                Swollen lymph glands may develop.
The skin area at the bite may turn black.
Swelling and pain can last up to ten days.

                excerpted from:

I'm a very big fan of no pain, no redness and no swelling!
Let alone tears in the skin, swollen lymph glands, and my skin turning black (not that there's anything wrong with black skin, mind you!).
And I especially don't want to these to last 10 days!

You've taken my reply out of context. I said "in comparison" to a brown recluse.

Pain, redness, swelling ... sounds like a chigger bite or a pimple
Of course it "TEARS" into the skin, .. venom wouldn't work other wise, I don't think its like an inch long tear or anything.
The skin may turn black.... that's a bruise .

A recluse can kill you, give you gangrene, or leave you permanently scarred ! Ive seen it. Well not the dieing part.

I don't want a wolf spider biting me but they aren't aggressive and pretty cool IMO. They are obviously impressive or we would be talking about them. I wouldn't burn one just cause I saw it.

                        Spiders are our friends!!

They eat bad bugs. If not for spiders, there'd be a lot more bad bugs!

Now at Fort McClellan I remember those huge, colorful garden spiders hanging out in their webs over the entrance to one latrine near the shooting ranges.

They really looked scary big and ready to drop down on you.

That doesn't compare with the feeling of FEAR you get while sitting on the pot and wondering if one of their cousins was going to BITE you from BELOW!!

                        Ha ha ha!!

Never been bitten on the pot,

                            ^^aren't aggressive my foot...lol.

Besides this one , I KILLED, I get them in the house because I live near some big open fields and such and these things get huge IMO.
If a spider stays away and leaves me alone I am fine...but when you are sitting in your recliner and you see one pulling the cat across the carpet and it makes you freeze in fear but no one else is around to help the cat....you have to do something.
I went to get up to try and overcome my fear and dispose of the predator, when I kicked the foot pad down the thing stopped and turned and looked at me, just starring right at me. I waited and tried to move but I couldn't for a few seconds...it gave the cat time to get away.. then I mustered up the courage to stand up....well the thing also stood up. It like raised up on all it's legs. I sat back down and it laid back down too, I stood up again and so did the spider. I moved to the side and it turned to continue starring at me, still standing tall mind you. I moved to the other side and it spun in place , still starring at me...(I am getting chills typing this). As I finally was able to move towards it...it came towards me. I thought...no F'N way this is happening! I reached for a shoe that was laying there and it turned and watched my hand the whole time. I grabbed the shoe and got up the courage to go towards it...it came towards me also..(haha, not aggressive)...well I just got up the notion I was gonna smash it and went for it. I missed it the first swing and it still came at me...I moved and swung again and got it...but it was not dead...still tried to come at me...it took another 5 hits to get it to stop moving.
So yes I am a big wimp when it comes to spiders...especially these kind of spiders.... but no matter how good one thinks they are...if I can I will kill it every time.

Never had dealing with brown recluse, but have with rather large mother wolf spider!
                              Not a pretty site!

None the less, if they are out side I leave them be, that's where they belong!

But, when they enter my house they are in my domain and unless they cooperate in being removed, they will be terminated with prejudice!
