I was thinking about dremmeling out the rear speaker plastic holder and adapting it to fit 6x9's.
I have no experience doing this so it will be pretty seat-of-the-pants.
Any of you guys done this or something to where its an upgrade from the 4" but doesnt look ghetto?

P.s. I don't want a box in the trunk.

You could always build a rear cargo shelf and throw 6x9's in there. That's what I've got hooked up and it's a pretty solid setup. You can make them out of plywood... the plans used to be circulating on the forums. Maybe they're still out there. I like having the trunk relatively sealed off and having the speakers bounce against the rear window... I know nothing of acoustic engineering, but if it works good and sounds good, I'm good.

This is what I did to. I used 1/2 mdf and carpeted it to match my interior. I also used spacers that I bought off of ebay for the 6x9s but Im not sure if they were 100% needed.

The PO of my car had done something similar. It was pretty ghetto though and all but one speaker was working and that one was crappy. I tossed the whole thing and just bought some nice 4in speakers to fit the rear location. I've been happy with that. Here is what the PO had done though so you get the idea.

Be careful with your shelf setup if you go this route. The PO had just made this shelf to fit, but I think it wasn't secured very well. So even though he had the hole cut out for the third brake light it still moved over enough to where when it was closed it busted the back of the third brake light.

I did this if you look up my build thread they are pretty much the only pictures in there, The issue i had was that after cutting so much off it made them weak and i never got around to reinforcing them so the covers cracked under the weight. But it wouldn't be hard to reinforce them i just didnt notice how bad it was until it was to late

Heres mine... and yes I know my speaker is broken the grills should be on but fell off and never put them back on and I broke the speaker when I had something in the boot and slammed the door I would prefer this rout because it keeps the speaker somewhat sealed and keeps the lower tones from canceling themselves out.

oh forgot to mention that when I did this my hatch will no longer stay open on its own but it could be that I just have a wore out strut

That's pretty good work there Bobby...did you route the wiring all the way up the back pillar and through the weather seal thing into the hatch? Cool thing about that location too is it points the speakers toward you. Rather than straight up...also conceals them from view a bit more. The thing I don't like about putting bigger speakers in the rear location or making a shelf is it allows passerbys to just see in the back of your car and see you have some nice speakers rip for the taking! That's why I went with the nice simple 4in ones in the stock location.

What I meant in my OP was the side plastic that the 4" are mounted in. I was gonna dremmel that out to house some 6" or 6"x9"s.
Now that I see bobyspiders setup, I might do that and use them as "woofers" do 6" in the rear plastic oem's, and upgrade the fronts to better 4".

I see the boss 4" at Walmart for $15. The reviews all around seem like they are a good "budget" speaker. Any thoughts?

Just get some nice 4" in the stock location and ad a small amp+sub. I love the way my car sounds.

thanks for the compliment and yes I went back through where the defrost and brake light wires come through. I just couldnt deal with 4 inchers I needed some noise. I am going to mount 6x9s in my front door panels as well sometime soon that should do it for me

I would avoid 6x9's, and go with 5.25" in the stock location, if you want to upsize. You can make an adapter that will screw in with the original mounting screws.

I added a sub under the seat that makes up for the lack of low end in the 4" size.
