Cross talk happens when you run stereo. It is the over/under lap between the left and right channels. Like a sound that moves from one side to the other. This should not be an issue because the head unit should run the rear channels as a mono signal once the subwoofer setting in the radio is active. I know for a fact that the Pioneers produce a mono signal so there is good reason to believe that the Sony should as well. Pioneer has had the ability to do sub on their rear speaker outputs for years, on their better radios.

DVC is shorthand for Dual Voice Coil. Or Disney Vacation Club, but I am pretty confident is was the former.

Damping factor is the ability of the power source to stop and start the speaker, the ability to effectively control the cone movement. Since we are going there, lets talk a little more about it. Yes it is likely that the radio does not have a stellar damping factor. This becomes a larger issue the larger and heavier the cone gets. The more power that is required to run the speaker, the more the damping factor requirement also increases. The damping factor is the brakes of the speaker. The higher the damping factor the more accurate and musical the speaker will perform.

I am pretty confident that the 8 inch will be pretty accurate with the small amount of power produced by the radio, it is fairly sensitive(light weight cone, sufficient motor structure, and a tuned vented enclosure) and also plenty capable of being accurate enough to be very enjoyable.

Yes the better option would be to add an amp for both the sub and the front speakers but within the constraints of the OP you have picked a solid value engineered little system. Don't get too bogged down in the way other folks would accomplish similar tasks. Go for it. You will be happy with this little setup. If you find that it is lacking in one area or another, you will not have to go backward to upgrade. It would only be a matter of adding an amplifier to the existing build to get better quality out of the chosen parts.

Don't run a sub without a low pass filter. You'll mid bass your eardrums into an early grave

I've ran every combination of woofers possible in my cars over the years. Dual fifteens, dual twelves, single twelve, dual tens, single ten in a band pass box, dual eights. Dual eights were unquestionably my favorite. They hit the kick drum hard, and I had the box tuned low low low and it also sounded excellent on rap too.

I'm a fan of sealed boxes... Fewer phasing issues and the box helps the damping.

Wow, sounds like my setup in Dusty is kind of overkill. The sub box has a pair of Radio Squawk 12 inch dual coils good for 120 watts each, and a pair of horn tweaters with 2 inch reflex tubes for ventilation. The head unit is a JVC, and it has a menu item that allows the rear channel to be programmed for subwoofers at high or low power, and a range of high, mid, or low freq.

                Very bulky, but overwhelming sound.

I like just some multi-way 6x9 speakers too. I was very pleasantly surprised when I put in a good head unit and just good speakers when I had my Escort. I guess it depends on what you're used to, though.

I like a sub in a home system, so I'm sure I'd like it once I ever get my stuff installed.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

oh man, it sounds INCREDIBLE! The bass tube absolutely needs to be pointed at the rear corner as per instructions - makes a huge difference. The 4" speakers are lacking a little in midrange but the highs are crystal clear, and with the HPF set at 100 and the LPF also at 100 the spectrum is covered pretty well.

I'll be honest, the PO of this steva had installed some "bolt" speakers and they didn't sound bad at all with this high powered sony head unit! If anyone is interested I can sell em cheep. Pictures upon request, this is what they are: https://www.amazon.com/Lightning-Aud.../dp/B00009W5M8

Thanks again to all who voiced opinions on my little thread, I'm a happy camper now!
