using 2 1/4 pipe on a stock B3 will cause you to loose a bit of torque... unless you've got at least a header + CAI, and preff a PnP or cam.
A larger pipe will change th sound a little though.
I know on my B6 (which i did a small PnP and CAI job on) i'm having exhaust issues right after my header where my custom 2 1/8" DP is still leaking and i loose a lot of torque!! but for the few weeks when the exhaust was good i could break the tires loose anytime in 1st and when shifting into 2nd.
Of course having a larger pipe will not lose you as much torque as having a leaking DP, but it is something to consider.~Nate

I break em loose in first and second and I'm still stock with the adoption of a clutch job

I seem to have a hole/crack in my exhaust manifold or the gasket though, as I can hear the sort of 'air-sputtering' when I accelerate. I've noticed my mileage has dropped off too..not sure if they're related, but I need to get it fixed soon.
