  • what kind of clutch

im swapping in the f series tranny out of an 89 mazda 323 into my aspire.anyone know of a good clutch to use?wat all cars will the clutch work out of?

What engine do you have? That will make a big difference. If you don't have a turbo on the motor, just use the stock clutch for that motor. IF you have a BP, get a clutch for a SOHC B8 protege. You can't use the BP clutch because the spline count is different. If you are using the F-series transmission, whichever clutch you choose has to be for a car that had an F-series transmission.

I have the 6 pad solid hub clutch in my car with the 89 323 tranny and the BP engine and it seems to work good. I haven't got a chance to put many miles on it but it hooks up hard and fast. If I were to change it out I would probably put the spring centered hub one on as it would be a little more forgiving for daily use.

^^^ Your signature says you have a G-series tranny, but then you say you have an 89 323 tranny. The 89 NA 323 had an F-series tranny. The 89 323 GT had a G-series tranny.

aspireguy, If you use an F-series tranny, you must use an F-series flywheel and clutch. These can be found in:
          4-cyl MX-3
          B8 proteges
          323s any year
          Capri non turbo

Basically any B-series Mazda cars other than festivas, aspires, 323 GT, GTX, escort GT, capri turbo, and proteges with the BP. I don't know what is hooked to the proteges with the 1.5.

There were proteges with BPs which had G-series transmissions. There are also proteges with SOHC 1.8s that have F-series transmissions. For anyone else reading this, G-series trannies have 22 tooth input splines, while F-series are 20 tooth. The protege with the BP was an LX, the protege with the SOHC 1.8 was the DX. The SOHC protege has 7 7/8 inch clutch, while the mx-3 has a 7 1/2 inch clutch. The BP protege clutch is 8 7/8 inches. The protege with the 1.5 also uses the F-series tranny. The AWD protege uses a G-series AWD transmission, so this clutch will not work either.

my bad, didn't even think about the f vs g series when I posted that... Mine was from a 323 gt and is the g series. Regardless, I would suggest a spring centered hub for whatever clutch you choose.

correct. typically though the bigger clutch offers more holding power, but it is not that big of a deal.

as for what type of clutch to get, I would go with LittleHoe's suggestion.
