  • removing my head on B3, machine it to higher compression?

I am removing my cylinder head and I'll be taking it to a machine shop for cleaning up and to see if there is warpage... how hard would it be to take 0.020" off to increase the compression? or even 0.040". how much can I go safely? If I do this, will i have to tamper with the ECU or something else for the compensation? anybody else with a B3 that has done this?

B6 SOHC performance cams would be awesome... any possibility of getting them used? any other stock engine that would have a performance profile cam that would work? thanks for the help!

do yourself a favor and have the shelf on the exhaust runners smoothed out, it helps the top end a bit and it's "free" power. use the B3 headers and street cam from FMS (good results) you don't need anything over 2" exhaust though plus it'll keep the cost down. DON'T go higher than 10:1 CR unless you plan on using high test for the rest of it's life.

sorry for the stupid question, but what is "the shelf on the exhaust runners smoothed out" in the above post by FestYboy? Is this porting the exhaust side of the head? I am thinking about doing a mild DIY porting anyway..

                    scitzz,
raisisng compression USUALLY has a positive effect on MPG, BUT having the new found power, ones foot is also usually a bit heavier negating the gas savings.

                    EJP,
that shelf removal is porting the exhaust runners, but you only want to smooth the shelf (give it a nice radius) and not actually hog out the runner. keeping the exhaust velocity up is a good thing, and the more you hog out, the slower the gasses travel due to expantion.

By the way, what is the stock CR on the B3? Did this change any from '88-'93 auto or manual?

Then Mitchell is wrong. I'm looking at both an 88 and 92 shop manual, they both say 9.7:1

the 323s had different ratios for manual and auto trannys (higher for the autos)
