The trans is specific to that car, it is four wheel drive. Parts might be tough to find. I sold my GTX trans for $300 and the guy said it was a bargin!

if worse comes to worse you'd have a good motor swap

        1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
        1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

^^i do agree it would be a shame to strip down a GTX, but IF it's not fixable, then might as well use the good parts

I stripped down a GTX, it was badly rusted. But I made some money and helped keep a few other GTX's running and ended up with a free B6T!

Is this the white one from craigslist?

Check over at http://www.mazda323performance.com/forum/index.php and see where to get it rebuilt. Maybe the G25M-R syncros might work.

I've owned a couple of GTX's and the weak spot on these cars are the trannies. Transfer cases commonly wear out due to lack of maintenance. Since their oil supply is separate from the transmission, many forget to check the fluid level or change the fluid. The rear output shaft bearing is usually the first to go, so get under the car and try to move the very front of the drive shaft yoke up and down. If it's loose, you're going to have problems. Also, synchros are notoriously weak because of the fluid used. Only a fluid that will NOT harm yellow metals should be used in these trannies which is not specified in the manual. Anything but a synchromesh compatible will lead to soft gears.

These cars can be pretty quick with the right mods but sure arent as quick as a Festiva could be. You could easily get 2k out of this car selling it in the rally ads.
