  • 8MM plug wires for Festiva?

I am upgrading ignition system. 7MM wires on festiva now. Want to put 8MM wires on. Is there an app. for another car that has 8MM wires that are exact fit for my 88 carbed festy. I.E. Same length wires and fit the rotor type dist. cap?

Protege dx? those worked on mine...... but I ended up getting Taylors and cutting them to fit.

BTW Greg, would there be a significant advantage spark-wise to going with 8mm? I am using a 45,000-volt aftermarket coil on two of my cars.

I was trying to find wires that are direct fit. I hate putting wires together.
I also looked at some for V8 ford figuring there would be at least 4 that were same length or close enough. Some on evilbay for like $30 and they are 9MM.
Taylors are really good wires, though.

Tom. Bigger wire carries the voltage better. Just bigger wire alone can increase spark at plug. So... hotter coil + bigger wire + larger gap all go hand in hand together.

Bigger wires just have less resistance. Check all of them with an ohm meter and you'll find alot of the little wires carry just as much as the big wires.

Then why did YOU use the larger wires if its all the same????
I will look and find the article I just read about wires and ignition systems. Do you think reading with an ohm meter is same as 50,000 volts going thru the wire?

              Here's one I read:
              http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/DavidKucharczyk/ignition.html
It seems that high voltage can leak right through the insulation of the wire itself. The more insulation, the least leaking. I would use 8MM and maybe even 9-10MM couldnt hurt.
There is an even better article, and, of course I didnt bookmark it. But I will find it. Anyone got any thoughts on this subject? More info= more knowledge.

Magnecor makes them in 8, 8.5, and 10mm. It's what Roger sells at FMS.
Likely set # 4577 in 8.5 mm, 4077 in 8mm. They say they will custom build for any application also. Informative web site too!

yep, heres my thoughts....go to garden hose size wiring....that way the little volts will never escape...:-)....and people will look in amazement !.....actually there is a point of overkill and non necessary expense...8mm is more than sufficient...

I got a universal Accel kit @ autozone. I think it was $25 and you can do two cars + have extra wire. Of course you have to put them together yourself...

Autozone carries performance plug wires. Either 8mm or 8.5mm. In your choice of colors.
The other McParts sites I looked at seemed to top out at 7mm, even for "performance" ones.

Some larger wires have less resistance (resistance is measured in ohms) to electical flow (electrical flow is measured in amperes). But is depends on the wire material used.
Volts don't go anywhere. Voltage (or potential differcential or voltage differential) is is a measure "across" the resistance provided by the wire. So yes, reading with an ohm meter will tell you how much resistance to electrical flow there will be.

Allright, Thank you all for the input! Good info! I was of the thought that the extra protection of the 8MM from the increased voltage of an aftermarket coil would be better than the 7MM. (besides,I want some cool RED ones to match my festy!)
