  • 89' Auto to 5-speed manual

Everyone knows the 89' Auto's are the fastest autos right? I guess because they have vacuum advance or something, doesnt really make sense to me, but anyways, I once had an idea, but after more thinking, will it work? My idea is to take and swap in a replacement engine into my 89' auto, to make work again, probably just a B3, nothing fancy. My question is, I was also thinking I would like to swap a 5-spd into it. Would I be able to keep the 89' EFI system, or would I have to switch to a 90-93 EFI system, reason being the 89' 5-spd computers are for a carbed setup, and I dont think they have a different computer for autos than manuals, so my 89' auto computer wont work if I try to install a 5-spd, will it?

No one wants to give you any "thoughts"....you'll just neglect it and run it out of oil again so what's the point of a swap??

My thoughts are, given your rant in the Arena, to go with WES's assessment.
I will provide you one piece of advice, we have PM's use them instead of taking your issue public, or not so public via the Arena.
You are ranting on a long time, knowledgeable, and mechanically capable member here.

then WES should of done the same,

kept his comments to himself, instead of the useless crap above

just remember, WES made this comment, just to be spiteful in the first place and since he did it in the public eye.
I don't see why he can't take this argument to the arena

unless Pu241 has a problem with pwgus too??????????

Gus, my GUESS is that the '89 ATX ECU will run the 5 speed FI swap just fine. There are no computer controls for the transaxle to worry about, so the only thing the '89 ATX ECU may be "different" on is running the specific '89 FI distributor. It's possible the ECU doesn't even differentiate between distributors, so that may not apply.

ahhh, thats more helpfull, very interesting and much appreciated. I was thinking the computer had an input for like the clutch on off switch on a manual and the neutral safety switch on an auto, but maybe not. how different is the 89 distributor? I forget. If I ever happened to make this work, would this become the fastest stock manual setup available, since isnt the 89 EFI system faster than the other EFI systems?

I think the '89 ATX distributor just has a greater timing advance adjustment.

Ive got a swapped car, a B6D out of a 93 Capri XR2, with an auto tranny Capri ECU, but on a Festy 5-speed. No real issues.

I don't think you will have any problems. Auto's and manual's use the same ECU. Just be sure to rebuid/replace the head and block only. Reuse all of the same electronics. Then just switch trans. I'm doing this on a 90 but have a 89 waiting.
