i was out playing around on the highway today. still at low boost but i did a couple hard pulls in 4th. then i cruised at 55mph for about 3 miles till i got of the exit ramp. as i was getting off, i put it in nuetral and i could here some grinding sounds from the tranny.

drove it lightly a few miles home. the shifting feels really notchy. sounds sorta like there are metal shards in the tranny being ground up. i parked it until i can figure out whats up. it did still drive fine, but i didnt put any pressure on it. when i do, the grinding gets worse so i babied it home.

i noticed a few drips of tranny fluid after i parked it.

is my tranny toast? i was told it is an aspire tranny.

here are some pics of it

tranny mounts to the motor here. shouldnt there be a block off plate over this? maybe something got in this hole

this is a straight down shot on the tranny

    here is the underneath shot.

Yes there should be a thin metal plate sandwiched between the engine/trans.

that is an aspire trans for sure, you can tell by the ribs in the casting. I would say best way to know if its internal is to drain your fluid and check for metal filings/chunks. It could be bad diff bearings if your axle seals start leaking all over the place.

Isn't this the green turbo'd BP car? If so, I would just plan on a "G" trans swap. You have enough power that you'll be doing this every 6 months until you get a trans that will take it.

well something has definitely started leaking, and it wasnt leaking last week when i bought it.

i have class all day tomorrow so i will try to drain it on tuesday.

if it was the diff bearings i wouldnt hear it while its sitting still though would i? for the most part it is quiet but if i rev it up, it grinds a little as the rpms drop.

Right, you wouldn't hear the diff bearings if you where standing still, but you could hear some of the other bearings. In the trans there are 2 on the output shaft 2 on the input shaft, and 2 on the diff. You have a throw out bearing up in front of the clutch, right up through where that access plate is missing and all that dirt is going in, that could be it, and it's the cheapest bearing. You would be able to hear a difference in the sound of that bearing while standing still with the car running and working the clutch on and off while in neutral, but that affects the sound of the input shaft bearings as well Last would be the little pilot bearing, but I'm pretty sure that's not going to be it. I gotta agree with BLKFORDSEDAN, you're overloading that trans, it's just a matter of time if you don't f or g up.

ill get pics of the other tranny i have tomorrow. i will probably throw it in beacuse it can hold a bigger clutch and i beleive it is stronger but i will let you guys decide that.

The throw out bearing is a sealed bearing, it is not that likely to get dirt in it that ruins it over a short period of time. If it is bad it will make noise and affect shifting. The dirt that may enter is more likely to affect the clutch. The pilot bearing is protected once the tranny is in place, so that is not likely affected by the open gap. It is more probable the gears or diff are damaged, and bits are grinding around. As the bits shift around it may make less noise, until something else breaks. But in that case one of your gears should misbehave, popping out of gear or refusing to go in, or not moving the car.

If the gears or diff are gone will you repair it, or just get another? If you get another it does not matter what you do to it next. You could keep driving it to see what happens next!

Yup poor little trans was not really expected to live behind 3-4x as much power as stock for long. They grenade behind hard driven N/A BP's regularly.

im hoping i dont have to wap the tranny in right now. i have another tranny but its sort of an unconvenient time. plus i would have to wait on a clutch for that tranny.

the smoothness of the shifting was definitely affected.

any advice on what tranny fluid to use? not looking to spend much on it in case y tranny is toast lol
