A good example is a buisness friend of mine in florida has a turbo shop aswell,he has a pulling lawn tractor putting out 242 HP with a highly modified 5 horse briggs. The engine l'm running now has a stock bottom end so l don't see any reason to turn more than 6500 rpm. The modifications l'm doing l feel many of you would be interested in as an allternative to an engine swap & would consist of using the engine you already have just improving on the top end as an economical way to go. After this of course, l'm goin to put the screws to it, maybe a 9 second festiva in the works!

this is all awesome...seriously i mean that. my question is who are you (really) and what do you do (for real). you have got to be a engeneer of some sort or a sevant to be sure of those numbers (and i beleive you about them, because its been done). but seriously what kind of crazy fun job do you really have. and........ if you get there do you think you could throw together a... lets just say $1200 300hp package for the b3 (minus trans). but for real bro your work is awesome and i think you can turn it up for all of us here, maybe shake it up alittle. im just glad you picked festivas to do it on and that i get to see it, im def suscibed to this!

I think 300hp from a b3 this guy's way will cost more than 1200. you can motor swap and t-charge for 300hp for that price though.

I worked on an M3 today

I don't think those silly BMW engineers need schooling. Felt fast to me.

I'll look into that some more Matt, i know for sure the B6 cranks are forged, and seeing that they share throws and journal sizes, one would gather that the B3 cranks are forged as well... research will ensue!

resuwrecked, you evidenty missed my sarcasim in what i said above, but oh well.i have no doubt the beemer runs well but it's intended operating range differs from what im looking for, i want afat and flat torque curve.when i throw some boost to this engine it will have the personality of a stroker small block rather than honda 2000. torque gets it moving, hp keeps it moving, drag racing more important to it get moving! by the way the bmw engine has imrc "s which in that design reduce runner crosssection, which inceases runner volocity, essentally giving the effect of longer runners, without long runners

not sure if its gonna stay fwd or not. thinking about spinning the engine making an adapter to bolt a 5spd tremec and go rwd we'll see.

RWD would be cool, there is a member on here, ketchup, that has a RWD BP turbo.

I got the sarcasm, I was directing toward the other guy. The imrc is similar to our vics on the bp. best of both worlds- long runner low end and short runner for top end. Bmw has 3 different stage intake designs, variable cam timing and variable lift, all of which provide a fat, flat torque curve.

A super long runner on a b3 would be good for low end.

The reason most 4cyl engines, (like the 2.0 in the s2000) are such lofty motors because small displacement engines just aren't to great at making low end power. the s2000 make 123hp per liter, yeah, but at a high rpm.

The turbo required to make 460hp (conservative realistic number for 64# injectors that doesn't involve maxing them out) will be lazy as hell at anything under 4krpm on a 1300cc anyway.

                            460hp requires 50.6lb/min air.
                            50.6 lb/min = 732cfm
                            A gt30r....Garrett GT30R: uses GT37 76mm 56trim compressor. 4 inch compressor inlet, 2.5 inch outlet, 60mm 84trim turbine, T3 inlet flange, 4 inch outlet, .82 and 1.06 A/R.
                            52 LB/Min or 752cfm max flow @ 2.7PR @ 68% efficiency.
36psi max boost limited by compressor wheel speed.

                            A 2.7pr is aprox 40psi.

I wonder at what rpm a 1.3 can spool a gt30r, with a 1.06ar turbine, to 40psi? Actually a larger turbo would be better suited for such output, since 40psi is outside this 'charger's efficiency range due to speed limitations.

I'm not a turbo guru or anything, I used conservative values in equations from a few tuning sites to figure out some numbers. Your'e either going to need very high boost pressures, or a peak rpm a l i t t l e higher than 6500 to get what you want.

That peppy stroker small block personality is elusive with a high hp turbocharged 1.3

a dual turbo like the RX-7 (FD) would be better suited for the performance goals i think. small turbo for low end boost (right off idle) and larger one that is fed by the turbine output and wastegate of smaller turbo. actually, thinking about it, it should be the other way around... large turbo first (with external wastegate) and that should feed the smaller turbo. a bi-compound turbo if you like.
