  • My 5th gear swap into my g series trans:lots of big pics

    i sourced my new 5th gear out of a 2.2l ford probe with a g series transmission.
    i decided to swap 5th gear cause i had to replace the 5th gear cover due to an interference issue(some one installed the wrong end cap from another g series on it and i didnt notice til it was installed)



    the difference in 5th gear covers:


    the gears side by side with the .71 gear on the left:


    the numbers on the new .71 small gear are HC31D


    the numbers on the stock gear are LC7N


    first i put the car into 1st gear. then i dropped my trans crossmember low enough to remove the 5th gear cover. once the cover was removed i hammered out the roll pin for the 5th gear selectoricture is taken fom me laying on my back looking up at the trans


    with the roll pin removed i slid the arm to engage 5th gear:


    having the transmission engaged in both 1st and 5th locks up the tranny and keeps the gears from spinning...

    i dont have access to air tools so i used my giant 1/2" 4' long breaker bar, a 12" extension and a 32mm and a 26mm socket. i used a jack stand for a pivot point to keep the socket square with the nuts


    after removing the nuts you just pull off both reverse gears and thereverse/5th gear hub and synchro . make sure the reverse/5th gear hub and synchro stay together because there are 3 little tabs held in by 2 snap rings and they will go flying. then pull off the 5th gear gears, replace with the new gears and install in reverse order. make sure to throughly clean the 5th gear cover and trans mating surface before applying rtv/silicone. with the stock end cap back on i have clearance again!!!!




    it dropped my 5th gear rpm by about 250rpm which may not sound like much but it does lower the noise in the car quite a bit...

    Looks relatively easy to get to with the tranny still in the car, which is good

      Yeah wow I'm impressed you did it with the transmission in! Nice work, brother... that'll make a huge difference in the car's performance!

        depends on how you mounted your engine/trans. i loosened the nuts on my front motor mount until they were flush with the studs. then i took the 4 bolts out of the cross member and lowered it until the crank/alt pulley wer touching the frame rail on the passenger side... the cover was a tight fit. especially when trying to install it with silicone sealant on it.

        as for performance it added around 16mph to my top speed according to: http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/tyres.html

          i kinda figured it took the crossmember being un-bolted in order to lower the trans low enough to get the cover off, but thats sure a hell of a lot less work then pulling the trans all the way out of the car

            Hmmm only a 250 RPM drop? What size tires are you running? Should be closer to 500 rpm drop. Whats your FD ratio?

            Do you have the correct gearset, did you count the teeth? The .716 gears I have here have part number A9CN on them

              i havent reset my speedo yet so tire size doesnt matter. 60 was at 2800 now its just above 2500 i have the 4.11 diff i believe... im sure i have the right set it came out to .71739 33 teeth on the small gear and 46 on the big one. stock is 35/43

              actual speed is 10% slower than speedo speed due to the 215/50/13's im running

              according to : http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/tyres.html my rpm dropped around 350ish

                  I thought the different was 4.11 in our trannies?

                    FSM says the Capri Gtype has a 3.85 final drive... the N/A capri trans is 4.105

                      ill ask the shop that rebuilds my trannies tomorrow... i saw a post on club protege that said that was a mis print... id love a 3.85 diff though....
                      I know its a piece of crap but im still faster...and its 100% legal!!!!!

                        Nice, I wish i had the fifth gear swap..It helps when driving the car as a dd.

                          apparently i do i have a 3.85 diff... the tooth count is 77/20 i was wondering why the gear/speed calculator seemed off... the trans shop also said next time i blow it up they'll count the teeth while they have it apart...

                            I believe it's the EGT trans has the 4.11 gears, I'm not positive but I can tear my trans apart to find out lol and when I did my diff swap in my probe trans I counted the teeth in my 323 gt/capri trans and it was the 3.85 final drive, but the probe trans is 4.38
