  • is any one running a lightened fly wheel?

the reason i ask is i have been doing some researching, and the pros ought weigh the cons, they say you can lighten the stock one a couple pounds, just wondering if any one has done it, i am going to be building up my engine and drive train, and could use the 2 cents

not sure why you would want a lighted flywheel , no one will see it....besides, if you need your 2 cents why waste the money on lighting one....sheeesh.... j/k

I have not had it done but I do not see the reasoning behind it in our cars....

its reducing rotating mass( almost like removing a 180 lb person in the car), with can make acceleration greater, better for holding corners and coming out of them, the down side is you have to be more precise with shifts, you gain revs fast but also lose them as quick. but from what i read, they give some good snap for even little crappy engines, the ideal weight reduction is 30% of the weight.

I'm running a lightened, not lighted, flywheel from FMS behind my B6. The main difference I've npoticed is that the engine revs up a bit quicker under throttle and that the revs drop a quicker between shifts. I went straight from a tired B3 with stock flywheel to a freshened up B6 with the lightened one so that's not really a fair comparison.

Since the initial install I've added a header and a rebuilt head with minor port and polish and really like the throttle response the lighter flywheel seems to give.

        Hope that helps.

I haven't driven a Festy with a lightened fw yet since my BP build is still in progress but a few other vehicles I've owned I have put them in and I'd say they are worth the extra money over stock, it took me a short while to get used to the snappy response of the way the car would rev, but there is a noticeable difference in the response in revs and I always thought the car seemed to accel just a hair better with one.
It's not the size that counts....It's how you use it.

I bought my festiva, then two days later drove it 800 miles to my uncles house not knowing ANYTHING about it besides that it had 210,000 miles on it...

Biglay 5150 lightend his flywheel as much as possible in his gutted festy and stomped everybody in his class in autox. He said it made it feel like it accelerated a lot better.... has a totally stock b3 and took first place at the end of the season. I'm having econoaddic lighten my flywheel for my b6t.

We took Biglay5150's flywheel down to just under 12lbs if I remember correctly. It revv'd
much quicker, made a very noticeable improvement.
So far got the B6T flywheel down a couple of pounds and still more to go.

Is the stock Festiva flywheel weight 17 lbs?

I'm thinking I'd like mine lightened to around 14 lbs.

i think the FMS one is a stock one lightened 30%, if you look at the calculation, 17 x 30% = 5.1

5.1-17=11.9 lbs from what i reseachered 30% is fine, but to truly spot on one should balance it. also it would be benificial to have it Drilled( like a brake rotor) but thats unsafe and can lead to stress cracks,( i think fidenza has one that is drilled out)
