Does FMS still sell that flywheel?

For a street driven car, the general rule of thumb is the flywheel should be appox 1% of the car weight (at least that's what I've always been told). 17Lbs for stock Festy puts it right in the ballpark for optimum driveability, MPG, etc.. I would think that lightening it even 2-3 Lbs would make a noticeable difference.

Yep. That's my plan. About three to four pounds should produce some noticeable improvement without going overboard.

I'll be running as light of wheels and tires as possible, too.

i had a machine shop lighten mine on Scrappy and the were able to pull 6 lbs off it safely. now the entire clutch assembly weighs as much as a stock flywheel.

How much did it cost to have that done? Notice a difference?

              Lightweight flywheels

I machined an aluminum flywheel for my dirttrack Saturn. It weighs 7 lbs. Engine revs very quickly to 8000 rpm.

near $300 but it was magnafluxed, resurfaced, and then lightened. and yes there is a BIG differance. instant response.

We picked up a Festy with a lightened flywheel on a B3 and Dean took it out to try it on the highway. It definitely revved up faster than the stock one, but it seemed to lose some power on the top end. Since it was done before we got it, not sure how much it had been lightened.

Does a lightened flywheel affect MPGs at all? Less rotating mass cause you to have to use more gas?

the only down side to a lightened flywheel is that if you dump the clutch on a launch there isnt alot of weight to keep it spinning like a heavy one, so your rpms will drop faster... BUT all you need to do is give it more gas... easy in the city it should help your mpg's cause its taking less power from your motor to spin it up to speed and using less gas...

in an undulating road conditions and short hills, a heavier flywheel will net you better MPGs as the engine will not want to drop RPMs as quickly.
on flat roads, you won't see a differance.

I suspect the MPG will go down quite a bit for most people, just because they'll always be free-revving it up to enjoy the snappy response and blasting from light to light! I know I would...........
