  • modifying the air box

I saw a post awhile back that a guy drilled some holes in the air box for better air flow, is this true or just wishfull thinking on my part.
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

TominMo did that. I'd hunt down the thread, but I'm just too lazy.

Or, maybe I'm not. Here's one where he talks about it. I'm sure there are more.

Discuss making performance enhancements to the OEM-spec engine in your Festiva or Aspire.

Take the filter out, leave the lid on the box open and take a test drive. This will give you an idea of how an open air filter or drilled out box will be like. It makes the engine sound alot better but usually won't give much power on a N/A engine.

All I did to mine was take that skinny 180 degree duct off (where it goes into the fender). The hole that's left is big enough to flow all the air a B3 will need. It made a small, but noticeable difference. It's a little louder too.

Yeah I pulled that off too, forgot to mention it. But if you look at the resulting hole and compare it to the hole going into the VAF, you can see the difference. The VAF hole is about 100% larger. That's why I drilled all those holes in the bottom airbox piece. Pu241 has driven in my car when it had the B3 and the airbox mods, and remarked on how peppy it was.

^ True on the VAF, but you're still dealing with a 50mm throttle body (about 3 square inches) minus the area the throttle blade takes up. The hole that's left when that duct is removed is about the same size in area.

Then again, extra holes can't hurt.

Is this something I can do on my 88? Might be a stupid question, but I had to ask...

Flip the lid on the carb's.. I think that's what I did can't remember. As for the holes it will help just leave the stock system in place. I made that mistake on the Festiva.. on the Escape I didn't though. Man that thing is a whole 'nother machine now.

What do you mean by flip the lid on the carb? Like literally flip the lid on the air filter?

Flip the lid on the air filter over. Old school, back in the carburetor days, hot rodder's trick.

Does it give it a noticeable difference?
